Ziggy stardust recording studio
The title of this album and band name will be very familiar… but this is not the David Bowie creation! The Ziggy Stardust Band is the brainchild of Errol Barker former cycle racing sensation of Christchurch, and he recorded a number of albums under this guise. In the mids, Barker arrived at the doors of Nightshift Studios, and asked to record some music there. After recording his vocal tracks, and some studio trickery including what van Bussell called outrageous effects , the product was completed.

I was inspired by going to the session that you did in the centre of Leeds a month or two back. Going from America to Harrogate. It really is an insight into those times and the thing that really struck me about your striving to be absolutely spot on in terms of accuracy. If possible, yeah, I believe there are certain parts of that period. And, look, yeah. I have great difficulties with a lot of that. Is that correct?

This is a bit of an outlier when it comes to my usual pieces but I was asked to undertake some research on this by a friend writing a music book, and he was happy that I publish the bare bone facts of where and when Ziggy was launched. Of course Bowie was a Nipponphile and so there is at least some connection to my usual writings on Japan. The question of where Ziggy was launched is often asked but is open to some misinformation? Basically it was a converted cellar and was the venue where Bowie and the Spiders from Mars rehearsed The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in mid, prior to its recording at Trident Studios.

In the end, No. Which is actually quite remarkable as it was the very first album I ever bought on record I initially bought all my music on cassette tape as I only had a cheap tape deck in the early days. It really is for me musically the perfect album…. Back in late , early , David Bowie was still relatively unknown. But that was all about to change for ever…. All the pieces for his success were now finally in place.
