First up is the fact that the Hi-Fi is really old, technologically speaking. There are a bunch of adapters floating around out there for this, but since Hi-Fi harkens back to a time when Apple was pushing its Universal Dock system, I find the Scosche adapter works best, since it both clips right into the Hi-Fi, and in turn allows you to clip in more Universal Dock adapters.
So, that gets us to compatibility with any pin iOS device. That gets us a working Hi-Fi that can charge an iPhone and play back music.

Perhaps the most significant is that a few years back, Apple decided to modify the dock-connector port. As a result, many people have felt forced to buy a new speaker system specifically made for an iPhone, iPad, or recent iPod. But before you rush out and buy new speakers , consider using an accessory designed to let you use newer players with older audio systems. You may end up extending the life of your current speakers while saving quite a bit of money. A few vendors product just such accessories.
