I've been reading a few other forums recently and there's quite a few people who dismiss this amp outright.
I'm thinking it's because it isn't a 2 channel amp and a lot of people want to play it like one. I really don't get the hate as it's a fantastic amp. The other thing is the whole boutique scene. Don't get me wrong some of these Marshall clones sound great, but, all the one's I've heard and played through I can get those sounds on my VM.
It does take a bit more fine tuning with the VM as it has a lot of different sounds to offer but I really can't understand people who are supposed seasoned guitarists dismissing it. Post by surlybastard » Mon Jun 25, pm I've thought this is caused by three things: 1. The lack of a second channel as you mentioned is something that causes a lot of people to dismiss the amp right off the top. I think most modern plays wants versatility at their feet and want to be able to switch between many tones.
The fact that I think most people find that this amp doesn't really sound its best until you turn it up beyond a certain level myself included. This makes it tough for someone who's window shopping at a store to actually get the full effect of the amp. I also think it's people not really knowing what they want. So he looks through the Marshall line and finds the VM, and orders one.
When he plugs it in and realizes just what that Jimmy Page tone entails extremely aggressive and heavy mid range , and finds it doesn't mesh well with other styles they play. I mention these three things because when I bought mine it wasn't love at first play, it took me awhile a couple of months to find and love the sound this amp produces. At various points I went through times where I considered trading it, but there's no way I would get rid of it now.
Especially since I got my a cabinet I don't think I could ever part with this amp. I do think that if a lot of people spent more time with the amp they would find what they like from it as it's not necessarily a plug and play amp, having a bit of patience was extremely rewarding for me.
A lot of people want an amp they can plug into, dial a few settings and they get their sound. I found the VM not to be like that at all. It took me quite a while to get a few settings that I'm really chuffed with. This is something many people would just dismiss quickly. You're in a store, you have limited time, you might have already looked at 4 or 5 other amps you think are ok, you kick start a VM and you begin to realise you need to spend a lot more time playing with it to get what you want out of it than time you have available.
Most people give up before this and just go onto the next one. Like many others here, I'd never sell mine in a pink fit. It's a keeper, but you don't realise this until after you've had it for a while :pimp.
Post by surfnorthwest » Mon Jun 25, pm It really always comes down to what works for the player. I am a single channel amp guy and prefer to use tones found rolling the guitars volume. It doesn't bother me anymore that some knock the VM, it has more then proven itself on many stages. For me it is perfect and IMO one of the top five Marshall's ever made. Post by sugarkane » Mon Jun 25, pm My experience of general internet chatter is different in that I have only heard great compliments on forums and reviews.
In music shops, not so much. Somehow Marshall wasn't able to market the VM so that staff on the sales floor get it and want to sell it. Lots of reasons Music sales is a pretty low paid job so it attracts a high turnover of mostly young staff who will typically love everything the VM isn't and nothing that it is.
Their pitch will be based on their preferences, not the customers needs, so will be about bells and whistles not pure quality. It will be based on repeating parrot-fashion the rerceived wisdom instead of hearing and thinking for oneself with an amp right there in the room.
Brutally, they are mostly minimum wage workers with no future in music retail - how knowledegable, experienced and motivated do you expect them to be? Then throw them the VM, an amp that literally is like nothing else. These shop floor guys are supposed to appear appear confident and you give them this??!! It is so hard to position a new product in a crowded market place - any product, even with the Marshall name behind it.
And I want to emphasise that there are many great shop staff out there, and they've given me great advice, but there is the other type too. Post by Slashwannabe1 » Mon Jun 25, pm I think it comes down to people who think they know tone and what its about having their head too far stuck up their own ass to sit back and learn something new about how real tone works. A lot of these people ripping on the VM probably run distortion pedals, and to me distortion pedals depending on how they are used are generally a crutch.
So I plug into the JVM first and run all 7's and jam for 10 minutes on it my first time trying a JVM Honestly, it was a truely great sounding amp, didn't have the VM caliber Mojo but it did a lot of things very well, well it did good enough to get people coming over to listen after jerking around the Mesa amp and one of the metal heads actually had me stop playing because he bought the amp while I was still plugged into it!.
So of course the next thing to do was just for fun plug into the Vintage Modern since I already have one and jam some fun licks The music store should have gave me a comission for the demo because there were people asking to put the VM on layaway I'd settle for a pack of new strings lol. My guitar on both of those rigs sounded amazing and the others on the walls just weren't set up to be amazing off the shelf which makes a huge difference when testing an amp.
The Vintage Modern is a great amp and often times its overlooked by people who just don't have the experience with gear or setting up a guitar or ones who are bull headed in their beliefs on how to get tone. You can be an amazing guitarist and still not have the greatest tone. Post by Gridlock » Tue Jun 26, am Ditto on all of the above. I thought about selling my for almost a year because I could never get rid of a raspy tone in HDR.
Maybe I had bad speakers in the Avatar??? A couple of months ago I bought a matching purple B cab and now I am definitely not selling this amp. Post by tonofbricks » Tue Jun 26, pm Yes,its misunderstood. Like been said earlier,i think the major "problems" is: People not giving it enough time, the amp is not easy to tweak if youre used to more modern multichannel amps.
It takes time to find "it". And people thinks it will work as a 2 channel amp, because of the ldr and hdr. Marshall JVM H. Egnater Renegade head. Post by Slashwannabe1 » Wed Jun 27, am tonofbricks wrote: Yes,its misunderstood. Post by tonofbricks » Wed Jun 27, am Well,in the case of instantly finding a great tone,i certainly needed a couple of hours to find "my" tone. And im still finding new settings that rocks. I think,in my case, that if i havent had the possibility to try it out as long as i did.
Id probably wouldnt have bought it. But thats me :o. Post by Nugget » Fri Jun 29, am I have had my for a little over a year. I had also thought about tradeing or selling it in the past. For me like some of the others it was a speaker change that brought me around. I was struggling to get the sound I wanted.
One day I decided to build my own 1x12 to fit the VM. It turned out nice, a closed back design along with a celestion G12 vintage I tried the greenback and also a WGS reaper before settling on the V I just made the swap for my 4x12 yesterday now it sports 4 G12 Vintage 30's. I play electric blues and classic hard rock. The tone I am able to get with this setup is what I like. I don't think the VM is the perfect amp but then again I don't think there is such a amp.
Guitars; Gibson Les Paul standard, Warmoth frankin strat.

Location: Norwich Posts: 2, I'm Hugo. There was an impressive display of purple fireworks inside the peccant tube, followed rapidly by foul smoke pouring out from components that were suddenly faced with lots of wiggly amps that they were not designed for. I had to pull the plug to stop things, so the internal fuse correctly specced did not stop the situation from getting much worse. So, I have some sympathy for Richard's statement about the safety of valve amps, but that aside I would prefer my gear to have 'fail to safety' design features.

I rated the speakers conservatively - they're in very good condition, with no notable dings or scratches to the furniture-grade finish. The Avatars were designed by Charles Hansen, and unlike later, ported, Avalons feature a sealed design with a near-ideal Q. Speakers have the original tweeter protective screens, which may be removed for slightly more articulate highs.
