We could hardly believe it so we took one apart to have a peek inside at the innards and it's great. This is simple, powerful and inexpensive for all that you get. The guitar, mic and accordion inputs each have individually optimized circuitry and work great with the guitar depending on exactly what you're after. It's all powered by two 6V6 output tubes and two 12AX7 preamp tubes.

The watt Excelsior elegantly encloses a single 15 inch Eminence Legend speaker which is perfectly voiced to broadcast all that great tube tone- provided by a pair of 6V6 tubes in the power section and a pair of 12AX7s in the preamp. A bottom-loaded primary chassis and top-loaded control chassis offer operating convenience and low noise.

The tone is incredible thanks to a pair of great sounding pickups- Handwound Broadcaster pickup in the bridge position for a snarling Tele spank and twang along with a Shawbucker in the neck for all that fat humbucking goodness. Of course it can also be split for a more traditional Tele sound. Adjustments are a breeze too!
The Truss Rod is accessible from the headstock, so you no longer have to remove the neck for a tweak. These guitars also have an ultra-comfy, Custom Mid 60's Oval C neck profile.

However, for the most discerning players, Crossroads pickups, electronic harness, and bridge can all be upgraded to Private Build parts. While they have are unmistakably vintage-inspired pickups, they do have enough oomph to push your amplifier's front end, producing the just right amount of top end harmonic content.
To achieve that additional feel of airy openness, and sensitivity to the acoustic tone, they are not wax-potted by default, but can be ordered with a light potting. Their humbuckers are voiced similar to PAFs with the unmistakable cutting midrange and clear, sweet, trebles. Kickbuckers feature a stacked bobbin design for hum-cancellation, and deliver a stronger, focused, and powerful tone - all while retaining the typical sound, look and size of a standard P The first and easiest upgrade that we recommend is the Private Build Brass Bridge.
It is milled from a solid brass block to offer maximum resonance, a very specific tonal imprint, and excellent note separation with twang and sustain. Private Build pickups can make a difference, especially with clean, pushed and low-mid gain tones. However, if your tones are mostly overdriven and higher gain, you may find the Crossroads pickups to be the most desirable option.

It is fully functional and in great condition. It sports an awesome Surf Green tolex which is rare. Not many of these amps were released with thesurf green tolex. This is a superb little amp. It sounds just as good as it looks.

Rest assured, this thing does sound bodacious, and does very much its own thing, too, so you will certainly stand out visually and sonically from the name brands on the bandstand. Which is to say, it was a brand that marketed products supplied by several different manufacturers. Chicago jobber Valco built some Excelsior-branded amps, as did some lesser and less desirable makers, but this big beauty appears to have been the work of defunct New Jersey amp maker Sano, which still has a reputation in the guitar-cum-accordion world.

By theyellowcar , April 8, in Amps and Cabs. On first release the stock eminence speaker enjoyed little favour among guitarists, some of whom swapped it out for different units. This shortcoming was rectified by Fender in their subsequent run of Excelsior Pro's and the new speaker has been well-received, afaik. Less so, I venture, if you're looking for a punchy bass combo with a touch of hair. Anyway, you could always buy it and flip it here if you don't like it. It's a little bit more and is only 9 watt on paper but the clean tones in the cool and hot channels are MUCH nicer.
