Budget "C12" capsules
Among the most prized microphones any professional recording engineer owns, there is usually at least one tube microphone. These sensitive and accurate mics incorporate a vacuum tube stage for amplification, with a basic design that is decades old but generally has yet to be improved upon.
Typically the tube is located right inside the body of the microphone. In most tube mics, the body sleeve can be unscrewed or removed by pulling set screws, and the tube can be accessed by the user. The tube is usually in a PC board socket and can be swapped very simply. A few mics have very rare subminiature solder-in tubes, and we have these in stock too!
These tube mics, because of reasons of availability, usually have a stock tube inside that is Russian or Chinese, or at best is a very late production military type. The tube can be swapped out for a much better quality new old stock NOS tube of the same or even similar type, and the sonic improvement can be astonishing. Gone will be the harsh and glassy upper midrange, and the hissy and spitty high end will smooth out.
The midrange will become less "boxy" sounding and the bass much tighter and more accurate. In short, a new old stock tube can make your mic sound like one costing many hundreds or thousands of dollars more! Take a look at the chart below and find your brand and model mic to see what tube it uses.
