Phy loudspeakers
LOG IN. Well, I finally got around to putting the PHY drivers in prototype baffles. I offset the drivers in the baffles. When I first fired the speakers up I was disappointed, but I realized they needed to be broken in.

PHY E17 LB15
Nothing as crucial for reproducing the sound as the unit Is that a fact? In an open baffle the unit is not hampered by any difference in effective load at front- and rear side. My open baffle is a sand-filled sandwich construction made out of two different kinds of wood, so any active contribution to the sound should be kept to a minimum.
An open baffle requires an unit with a total Quality Qts of at least 0,5 to be able to produce adequate bass. My current unit, the Philips AD, complies to this and has a good balanced tonal character. By the way, not all units with a Qts of 0,5 and higher are always suitable for open baffles Musical Affairs.
PHY-HP units distinguish themselves from most units by the use of extreme materials and their superb finish. The material used for the chassis is high quality bronze as used in bell-founding and in the top-line "SAG"-version silk isolated silver is used for the voice-coils! Each pair is carefully matched, as is the weight of the cones!
The coaxial KM30 has a weight of 9,3 kg, comes in a wooden enclosure and has a lifetime warranty. Reviews from almost all over the world are unanimous positive, so quality is a fact.
The KM30 is a so-called "time-aligned" coaxial unit, this means that time-differences between tweeter and woofer are nil. At the center of the woofer is a heavily modified piezoelectric tweeter mounted in a bronze chalice. The membrane of the tweeter is made of concave shaped paper. Frequency response is from 10Khz up to 30Khz and matches to the woofer which has a response op to 10Khz, hence a filter is not needed.
All units are equipped with a massive Alnico magnet. The KM30 has an efficiency of 97dB and has an impedance of 16ohms. Resonance frequency is 36hz and a Qts of 0. Let the music play! Hans Kortenbach Musical Affairs assisted me in mounting the KM30 into the open baffles; due to the relative high weight a job for two..
The units are mounted using 7 copper bolts provided with the unit and fitted into the opening used by the Philips AD An hour later the units were mounted and connected: let the music play! Right from the first tones it was clear to me that these KM30's completed the well proportioned sound of the AD These units are really fast! At once it is clear that a whizzer as used in the AD is really not more than a compromise when compared to the KM30's piezoelectric tweeter.
As the tweeter relieves the woofer from producing any sound above 10Khz, the woofers' capabilities come clear. This is a disadvantage for the Philips AD where the whizzer is part of the cone and thus increasing the mass of the cone hence slowing it down where in fact it should be faster to produce any sound above 10Khz Also the big Alnico magnet contributes to the fast sound as it is far more powerful than the Philips ferro-dure magnet.
Especially at the mid- and low-end response tones are more precise and better distinguishable. Highs are precise and o so sweet, not to be compared to the standard piezoelectric tweeters which are ready available from most shops! I must say that I've never heard highs as beautiful as from this unit Also the very low-end response is more accurate, faster and lower in frequency, probably because of the lower resonance frequency of 36hz.
Also these unit are way more coherence and that is really something to admire, I mean, in normal life coherence in sound is something that we take for granted and do not think about Are these units worth the money? I mean, about Euro is not peanuts.. I think that given the lifetime warranty and build quality combined with the given performance, they offer much value for money..

View Full Version : High efficiency speakers, 16ohm under 10K. What other choices are there for Shindo pairing? I'm specifically looking at the 16ohm lot, not just any speakers. Vintage or current, street price. There are a few good vintage RCA drivers. Price for vintage varies on condition and your skill for locating and being able to use such things.

With regard to a 8 incher, a six inch driver presents a slightly different set of compromises. But before that, a few words about the background. I remember talking to Bernard Salabert, the founder of the PHY-HP, several times over the phone and whenever we met, about a possible smaller, smaller than 21cm, widebandwidth driver. The driver was supposed to be such that it would preserve the quality criteria of the PHY drivers, so that Bernard would not need to worry about abandoning his principles, but whose price would not drive DIY enthusiasts into bankruptcy. For a long time Bernard was against such a unit. The initiative did not come from him. As I understood it, the main reason for his resistance was that he knew too well what would be the optimum when it comes to the ideal widebandwidth driver. All those thoughts culminated and crystallized in his most beloved child: the technically and aesthetically beautiful eight incher H21 LB Bernard too knew it: eight inches it had to be.

It was not resulting in a lack of further ideas, rather the contrary is true. A two-way project was planned and the ideas were transposed into prototypes. We learned that we are getting more this and that in different aspects, but it was payed with the loss of the intoxicating coherent sound picture the Rondo is able to paint. So we continued the widerange-road and focussed another project of our hearts.

The problem of deeper market penetration is compounded by the fact that PHY drivers cannot simply be stuck into cabinets optimized for modern drivers. Speaker manufacturers willing to step into the vintage void as it were seem few, presumably because having never heard superior examples, there's little attraction for them to pursue this route. Alas, the last two or three years have seen quite a renaissance in this sector, with solid indication that this field is gaining more widespread interest and acceptance again. Salabert's extreme sound room affords him and visitors an unusual opportunity to test the real prowess of his drivers in a unique way. A slightly concave infinite baffle aka The Wall mounts his drivers directly on bronze plates, then sand-filled concrete.

We have an inexpressible pleasure to announce that our long planned fusion finally had been constituted and an excellent Ocellia Calliope speakers, together with matching electronics and cables range now became a part of our offer. Ocellia has always been committed to audiophiles by consistently pushing limits and defying accepted practices in pursuit of absolute perfection. Their line of loudspeakers offers extraordinary craftsmanship and exemplary musical quality providing the listener with an experience that is unique and unparalleled to any other. Thanks to that an excellent heritage of Mr. Bernard Salabert of PHY had not being forgotten and lost as Ocellia looked after that, brought it back to life and keeps carry on and improve it. With these speakers — matching and easy to build cabinet designs are coming for free to help , encourage and inspire all of those who can not afford buying factory build Ocellias to get themselves as close as their budget and manual skills allow them.

Remote PHY 101: Why the Industry Is Working Together to Take Things Apart
Superposition is just a fancy term for adding; in this case, we are adding waves. In Part I of this experiment we have two speakers generating waves of the same frequency but starting in different positions and heading in opposite directions. Each wave travels from its source to a point at which we choose to detect it.
