When installing a home theater sound system, one of the biggest issues with which to contend is how to connect the rear speakers on the opposite side of the room from the components. One of the most common solutions is to figure how to get speaker wires under the carpet. Most speaker wires are too thick for under-carpet installation, as they will be visible and felt under the rug.

Special flat speaker wire made from insulated copper ribbons are one solution. Locate the most direct path between the wall where you are installing the speakers and the component wall. Move any furniture or other belongings off of the carpet and well away from the path. Place a thick piece of cardboard against the wall just above the carpet where one end of the speaker wire will be run.

Then slip the end of a flat pry bar between the carpet and the cardboard protecting the wall, and pry up the carpet from the tack strip along the edge of the wall, disconnecting about 18 inches of carpet from tack strip.

Pull back the carpet slightly and bend over the all of the tacks on a 3-inch wide section of tack strip with a hammer to prevent damage to the flat speaker wire. Then move to the opposite end of the under-carpet path, and repeat the process.

Slip the end of an undercarpet fish tape into one of the open edges in the carpet beneath the carpet and carpet padding so it is against the bare floor below. Gently slide the fish tape along the desired path toward the opening on the opposite wall. If the carpet padding begins to bunch at any point along the path, back the tape up a few inches to allow the carpet padding to settle and slowly try again.

Continue easing the fish tape under the carpet until you reach the open edge on the opposite end of the path, and expose about 12 inches of fish tape on the opposite end. Overlap 6 inches of four-conductor flat speaker wire with the exposed end of the fish tape and wrap the junction with electrical tape, making the junction as unobtrusive as possible. Gently pull back on the fish tape,guiding the flat wire underneath the carpet.

Work slowly to prevent any bulging or twisting of the wire. Continue pulling the fish tape, easing the wire along under the carpet until you reach the end of the fish tape and the flat wire pokes out from under the carpet. Unwrap the electrical tape holding the flat speaker wire to the fish tape, and set the fish tape aside. Then pull out enough speaker wire to connect the rear speakers.

Place the flat speaker wire over the bent-over section of tack strip. Pull the carpet toward the wall, and press the carpet down onto the tack strip. Repeat on the opposite side of the path. Connect the speaker wires to your components and rear speakers and replace the furnishings to their original locations.
