Discussion in 'Dell' started by Gari P, Jan 18, Motherboard Forums. Today, the subwoofer died with a big pop. Having a peek inside, I see that there is a capacitor across the incoming power supply. That has exploded I'm trying to find out what I should use as a replacement.

The reason it exploded is that yo probably had an overvoltage condition - although they have been know to die for other reasons there is a lot of information on the we about it - UL agonizes over it excessively. However, the MOV is no the reason your amp doesn't work, since it is installed across the lin and when it blows, it just quits protecting your equipment.
Usuall there is a thermal fuse inline in series with your power lead tha also blows when the MOV goes out so that the equipment doesn't operat without protection.
You will need to find and replace that therma fuse, as well. There are various schemes to make this work, some o them using capactors - see US Patent for an exampl www. Show Ignored Content.
