Since becoming Speaker, the Assembly has passed historic pieces of legislation including changes to our antiquated criminal justice system like cash bail reform, speedy trial reform, raise the age and decriminalizing marijuana. We have also enacted sweeping election reforms to make voting easier by creating an early voting period, allowing Election Day voter registration and closing the LLC loophole.
I have also led the charge in fighting for programs that help minority communities overcome challenges they too often face. Along with my Assembly colleagues, I have also fought for increased support for MWBEs to expand economic opportunities for disadvantaged and overlooked communities.

In keeping with his belief in pursuing holistic, consensus driven solutions, Speaker Heastie formed work groups to explore options for meaningful and sustainable investments for issues like child care and climate change.
