Type E II Speaker Repair Kit for Snell 8 Type E Type E III

The chitchat of audiophiles is obscure enough when they indulge in technical talk, but it gets worse when they appropriate the common language. A case in point is the frequent prattle about ''musical'' components.

To those unfamiliar with the argot, this may suggest gadgets possessed of artistic talent, anticipating perhaps the eventual emergence of a solid-state Mozart. What the aficionados really mean by attributing musicality to components - particularly to loudspeakers - is that their sound closely resembles real music. This is not as common as one would suppose. While loudspeakers, taken across the board, are a good deal better than they used to be, far too many are still deliberately made to sound ''impressive'' - with brilliant highs and hoked-up lows - rather than real.

So, musicality is still the exception rather than the rule. A truly musical loudspeaker is one that does not draw attention to itself. In a manner of speaking, it disappears from the listener's awareness.

One of the more esoteric loudspeaker companies resolutely heading in this direction is Snell Acoustics of Haverhill, Mass. To make its speakers as unobtrusive as possible, Snell designers approach their task in a very conservative manner, but with an eye to careful optimization of certain performance factors they consider crucial. As defined by the company's founder - the late Peter Snell of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -these factors are: uniform frequency response; avoidance of mutual interference between woofer, tweeter and midrange drivers in a speaker, and broad treble dispersion.

In themselves, these parameters are commonplace. Every speaker designer aspires to them. What distinguishes Snell designs is the uncommon degree to which all three have been realized. From the deepest organ bass to the shiny overtones of a trumpet or flute, the whole gamut of music emerges without diminishment or exaggeration. Moreover, the sound has a palpable three-dimensionality, attributable to the combined patterns of treble dispersion from a frontally mounted tweeter and a supplementary rear tweeter.

The latter adds acoustic ambiance by reflecting the sonic spectrum above 10, Hertz from the wall in back of the speakers. The deep and powerful bass is partly derived from sheer mass and size. This speaker stands 51 inches tall on a byinch base, and it weighs about pounds.

Each speaker comes in two sections stacked one atop the other. The lower part houses a inch woofer that projects its sound downward toward the floor, so that the floor itself acts as a propagating surface for those long low-frequency wavelengths. It is assumed, of course, that speakers of this caliber will find a home in big rooms with firm floors, solid enough not to vibrate and add their own resonance.

The upper section of each speaker contains the tweeters and a midrange unit isolated in its own compartment so as to eliminate acoustical interference between midrange and highs. The entire upper section, in turn, is isolated from the woofer enclosure by sound-absorbing pads. The effect of this careful separation between the different speaker elements is credited with the superb clarity of this speaker and is also responsible for its accurate stereo imaging.

As one listens to an orchestra, the position of the players insofar as it is retained on the recording is clearly defined not merely from left to right; there is also a pronounced awareness of the front-to-back dimension, and one gains the impression that the orchestra is placed on a stage just beyond the living-room wall, which has been rendered acoustically transparent.

As might be expected of a speaker this large, it takes any orchestral climax easily in stride, assuming it is linked to an amplifier of commensurate merit. What is perhaps more of a surprise is the delicacy of nuance it displays when reproducing the subtle textures of chamber music. Strings, in particular, benefit from the smoothness of the treble, which precludes every trace of that wiry hardness that often mars the timbre of string instruments on lesser loudspeakers.

Again, the musically aware are charmed by the naturalness of timbres, the accurate sonic imaging and the ambiance effect provided by a rear-facing auxiliary tweeter. Moreover, the top of these columnar spears is slanted, so the midrange is projected at an upward angle, which also contributes to the feeling of sonic spaciousness. Snell engineers attribute the timbral faithfulness of their speakers to their practice of fine-tuning the crossover network after each speaker is assembled.

The crossover network is the circuit which divides the total frequency spectrum among woofer, tweeter and midrange speaker, and its individualized post-assembly adjustment is said to assure a seamless sonic transition between these separate speaker elements. Is this individual fine-tuning the decisive ingredient? Or is it just a sales ploy? It's hard to say for sure, but whatever they do at Snell, it puts them in a class with the best and obviously gets them pretty close to the elusive aim of sheer musicality.

They were originally based in Newburyport, Massachusetts, when they in realized they needed more space. They then moved to Haverhill - also in Massachusetts.
