Bose 901 2 speakers

The Bose series speakers, which have been manufactured since , probably qualify as having the longest tenure of any currently made hi-fi product. Although they have undergone a continuing process of design modification- and the new Series V differs in almost every detail from the original Model the basic concept of the system remains unchanged to this day. Amar Bose, president and founder of the Bose company, decided that in order to give a subjective effect more like that of a live performance, a similar proportion of a speaker's sound output should be reflected from a home listening room's walls. To that end, every Series speaker, from the first model to the new Series V, has used nine identical full-range drivers, with two groups of four on its angled rear panels and a single driver facing forward. Before reaching the listener, the output of the rear drivers is reflected from the wall a foot or so behind the speaker, and usually from a side wall as well. The front driver, which provides only 11 per cent of the system's output, supplies the early-arrival information needed for stereo localization.

MrHeadfirst , Feb 17, Messages: 6, Location: Northern NJ. Did you get the EQ with them? If not they are not going to sound very good. Messages: 10, Location: RIP By Continentals, I assume you mean the ones that are pretty much wrapped in a wood veneer case, correct? That was the only difference with in the Series II line to the ones that are wrapped in cloth with small veneered wood on the end panels. The EQ, as mentioned, is not optional and will likely need some recapping to bring it back to original operating specs as well.

As for power, the more the merrier, depending on the size of your room and how loud you listen. Feel free to put wpc or more on them, though. Before you put them under that sort of 'welding' power, I'd suggest you check the surrounds to be sure they are not leaking air through the doped cloth. They'll need a reseal if that's the case.

I installed many pairs in doctors and lawyers homes when they were new. Geez, that makes me feel old Hope that helps. Cheers, David. Messages: 4, Location: Tullahoma,Tn. Any other speaker and people will pretty much always say it is your ears, you have to judge, but mention Bose They are not an "adiophile" speaker in the sense you will hear an exact reproduction of the music as it was recorded. I like to think of it more as the concert version of audiophile.

Having owned a pair of 's back in the day as they sat on top of the Pioneer HPM, I personally like them. If you just buy them, plop them down and turn them on, they are not a good speaker unless u happened to have hit the sweet spot by chance. When I had mine oh so many years ago, it took a while to get them where they sounded best.

It was a hard day, having to listen to and judge the sound all day, but someone had to do it. Seems to be we also used a spectrum analyzer to assist us.

Doubt if it really worked, but thought we were high tech anyway. You have to have the Bose equalizer. You have to have the Bose equalizer one reason they are slammed so much, won;t go into detail here One of my biggest concerns with getting a pair now is the volume level needed in order to get the best sound out of them. If memory serves me correctly, at lower volumes, you may as well have a cheap pair of bookshelf speakers. But , for me, oh how sweet as the volume control was turned right.

No such thing as too far right. A bose demo at the PX was plugging them straight into a wall socket, then hooking them up -never missed a beat. But, reason i also ended up with the HPM speakers underneath the Bose was I thought they lacked the deep bass detail.

Again this is all from a very shaky memory. As far as the difference in the Continentals, i could be wrong again, but i do believe it is just a regular Bose but with a special grill, blue cones and a sealed grill cover. Sounds the same as the rest. If you get tired of people making fun of them, send them my way - I like them and i can take it. I am using a pair of series II for a test run in my house right now, just hooked up to my marantz receiver and of course using the EQ.

I was testing these to see if I liked them enough to purchase them and I must say that I am not crazy about them. They do however have a pretty decent mid range nice for some older jazz music but all newer music sounds awful. However I have not found the sweet spot yet in my space. The other major issue I have with the stands is that my speaker cable does not fit through them, I had to use a smaller back up speaker cable to wire them up.

I had more of a laugh then anything else about that. I have to say that the best feature of the speaker is the design, they look damn good on the stands, very mid century modern. MarantzJon , Feb 17, These speakers dare you to turn them up louder and louder. They sound better the louder you turn them up. Messages: Location: Minneapolis, MN. I just gave away a pair of these guys. My buddy just loves them. I had them set up in my TV room for a few years.

I used a b Marantz to run them. Now, when the EQ was plugged in, my 'poor' ear couldn't hear the difference. But, that's just me. Do you have the stands? Very nice looking speaker! Tinyelvis , Feb 17, Not only do you get 90 wpc of great sound, you get to watch those cool VU meters.

Nothing spells cool audio in my book like VU power meters lol. So, if you're planning to use them for guitar work, that's not a problem but they will not sound like a Blond Fender with JBLs.

In this case, I'd suggest you turn them around so the 8 drivers face you and then kick in the Below 40 switch on the equalizer to minimize amp wattage down that low with a guitar.

Next, on the amp, are you planning to use these in performance along with an amp to drive them? If so, that's ok with the speakers. Bose made a version of the s for PA work. There was a recent thread here about them, too. The amp, however, should be sized for the size of venues you're planning to be in. Frankly, if it is small group work in say, a coffee shop, I'd plan on using one with a small guitar preamp to drive the power amp or run it through some sort of board.

In this case, wpc should be fine against an otherwise acoustic band. As for their use with s in the back, I installed a number of systems in homes with that configuration. Placement is a big consideration here and you'll need to have some way of controlling the back speaker levels separately to compensate.

Make sure the s have plenty of space around them and are 12 to 18" off the back wall. The original stands or something similar will put the speakers on ear level as you sit. I've also installed them from the ceiling, in which case, the same specs above apply but measured from the ceiling and not the floor. I used the back chain to control how they were pointed up or down to maximize sonic imaging at the listening position.

Separation of the speakers should follow the Cardas model of triangulation, though. Google that if you don't know what I'm talking about. This got too long.

MrHeadfirst , Feb 18, Messages: 46, Location: LoTL. If you're planning to get a second pair, then consider a set up that would have 2 s along the main wall of your listening area, set up as described. Then the other 2 would be placed on the side walls, same distance from the wall as the main ones, essentially flanking the main ones. Back in the 70s, I set up a couple of arrangements like this in some large living rooms without much blocking the s reflectiveness.

I can tell you that I still remember those setups as being open, spacious and full in their presentation. Again, it took a lot of power - I used a separate power amp for the second set driven through the same equalizer.

I also installed some where there was one set of s hanging from the ceiling directly above a set on the floor. This arrangement presented the proverbial wall of sound and worked quite well for small ensembles and jazz. The s-flanking arrangement, however, worked best for large orchestral presentation. It took some dinking around with placement, though, which is why you read this suggestion from those who have taken the time to work with them.

As a disclaimer, I am not saying that these were the best-ever speakers I've heard but only that you can coax a good presentation from s with good placement, good clean power and excellent source material.

Bose 901 Series II Owner's Manual

Well, never I never turn anything down when free, I took then. Got then home and started t o inspect them, cabinets, lots for nicks and scars, grill cloth, shot, broken binding post, needless to say pretty bad shape. Well replaced the grill cloth with some nice Klipsch black, a quick sand and applied some Watco oil. They don't look bad. Connect then to a reciever and CD player to see how they sounded, well I don't want to sound like a Klipsch snob, but, no highs, no lows, no sound stage, no imaging.

If so does anyone have experience with this? Is there some method to this that I can follow?

Bose 901 series V Speaker System Review

Part One. Other than using a green sharpie to get better CD sound, or that guy that calls you on the phone and osmotically makes your system sound better, no greater myth exists in audio today than that of the Bose speakers. Much like Bigfoot, have you even seen a pair of Bose speakers or, better yet, heard them? My Fiat Sport has a Bose sound system, and yes, it possesses admirable bass extension so there! I also experienced Bose on a recent trip home from Spain, where I sampled the new Burmester sound system in the latest Porsche Cabriolet, and Porsche was kind enough to fly me home first class. My last memory of the speakers harkens back to a jazz club in my hometown of Milwaukee that actually had the speakers installed into the ceiling by their pedestal bases and powered by a Marantz quad receiver.

Bose 901 Speaker Placement

In audiophile circles Bose is usually a punch line to a joke, or even seen as the great corporate evil of audio. Bose is known only using paper cone drivers pushed into unusually small boxes, never publishing frequency response specs, and suing Consumer Reports for giving them a bad review. Even though paper is a good material to use for speaker drivers, and plenty of audiophile companies don't publish specs, the perception is that Bose is overpriced junk.
