Ultimately, the Motu had faint distortion to my ears, a flatter image, and was not nearly as pleasing to listen to music on. The sig is much closer to the Xb, but the comes out ahead in what I would call "the emotional transfer" that comes through. The slightly extra clarity, depth, width, punch, while subtle, make the music more engaging to my ears.
I would be very interested to compare this Xb next to a new Symphony. I may just do this. Converters are a difficult thing to hear. It is like the difference between working at 48k or 96k. It is subtle, which makes it hard to describe. It is more, felt, than heard. At least to me. I wish I didn't feel such a difference while working in 96k.
This posting is more of a review, and maybe I should have posted it in the review section. Maybe the op will want to move it there. I encourage anyone looking for an inexpensive interface, to not buy new, and try out a BLA modded or The only downside is FireWire out bandwidth.
I have it connected via thunderbolt, but with adapters. As anything that makes the music more emotional and engaging, is worth more than anything else in your studio, imo. I wanted to restart every mix I was working on when I heard the playback. I honestly didn't expect to hear much of a difference. To my ear, there was. I suspect any modern converter will be an upgrade from this 16 year old tech - Mod or no mod.
Reason: Typo. That is interesting. I still use a digir sig mod. I thought you would have to buy something more expensive to do as good or better than the r bla sig mod. Can you expand on how the two compare? Last edited by d. Sure no problem. First let me preface. I have no interest in convincing anyone to use any particular brand of hard or software. I don't have "golden ears", and I find a lot of the discussion on this board about the finer points of audio either funny or confusing.
My philosophy has always been to make the most of what you have available. I had my for many years. It was working fine even through the endless cycle of software and computer upgrades. Honestly, my main reason for replacing it was that I was having a bout of rack envy.
I had earned a bit of extra cash over the summer, so I grabbed a few new things, the 8x being one. I had zero expectations about the Focusrite sounding better. However, I did expect to benefit from the low-latency aspects of the direct Thunderbolt connection that the 8x provided. A lot of my clients record thru autotune so this would be welcomed. I didn't do a side by side comparison.
I pulled the from the rack and replaced it with the 8x. The first thing I did after connecting everything was pull up a Pro Tools mix I had been working on. My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I heard the playback.
I was like, what the hell was I listening to?!! My mix was overly bright. I felt like I had to tear it down and start over. The sonic difference between the two units, in my humble opinion that means nothing to anyone but me, was not a small thing. Improved clarity is the simplest term I can use to describe the difference. Nothing scientific here, just my personal experience. Yours may be different. Thanks for your input! Very interesting. How long ago did you make the change? Does your mixes now translate better to other systems?
And how about the quality of the inputs? You only mentioned monitoring thru your new interface. It also made me wonder if the BLA mods are just hype. The routing in "totalmix" not to mention the rest of it's powerful and awesome feature set alone made me feel like I was working in the dark ages with the modded r It was game changing BLA touts the sound stage of their mods Fortunately I relied heavily on outboard pres anyways..
I was able to upgrade all of my tools to the latest versions, leverage flexible routing, vastly improved headphone and monitoring options and on top of everything I could finally hear everything.
I realize that everyone will have their own experiences, but for me, upgrading from my modded r to the latest flagship RME interface has been a game changer. Game changer. Wish I'd made the move sooner. Man in a Loft. I still love and use my R XB religously!!!
After a long convo with him, I was convinced. I used a normal R prior and I always thought it kinda sucked. The sound was muddy. Once I got the mod, wow!!!!! What a difference. If I panned something slightly one direction or cut or boosted some EQ gently, I could actually hear it!
I love it to this day. According to BL, the old Digidesign machines sound the best rated 9 , compared to most other modded interfaces that rank around 7 and 7. I'm not sure how much of that list is hype, if at all.
