A parts shortage is causing Tesla, GM, and other automakers to drop features, even ones already paid for. Going to pick up your new car? It might have taken months to find one—and even then, the car might not have all the features you really wanted. Blame it on the shortage of parts and on price increases for raw materials, which have hit the auto industry hard. Manufacturers such as Tesla, Ford, GM, and Nissan are cutting features, delaying production, and even raising prices in response to the situation.
And when the vehicles do arrive, they are sometimes missing features that—in some cases—the buyer already paid for. Demand for new cars has spiked at the same time that the auto industry got hit by shortages of semiconductors and raw materials needed to build vehicles.
That means consumers are ending up with fewer choices on dealer lots, and longer waits for vehicles with specific features and options. Similarly, GM shipped some trucks without a fuel-saving technology. Shortages are also leading to significant delays for some new vehicles—Ford told some Bronco buyers that their new vehicles would be delayed indefinitely because of problems with the roof supplier. Many more automakers have let plants sit idle. And anecdotal reports of dealers adding thousands of dollars to the prices of popular vehicles abound.

Some automakers are getting ahead of this by offering freebies to buyers.
