Wiring two 16 ohm speakers 8 ohms

There are several ways to wire up Speakers, the most common methods are Series and Parallel which are discussed here. Wiring up Speakers correctly to provide the best possible sound, requires some knowledge of Loading, Phase, and Impedance, while understanding Ohms Law will help you to connect your speakers properly. This allows the Amplifier to run cooler and more efficiently. It is often assumed the Amplifier is producing less output, but it still produces the same output, because each Speaker only gets a percentage of the overall power. However, increasing the resistance to more than 4 ohms of speaker resistance by adding Speakers in Series, will split the amplified audio output from the Amplifier across all the Speakers in the circuit. Adding additional Speakers is as easy, however, adding Speakers in Parallel causes the overall resistance of the circuit to drop, as resistance drops, the current must increase according to Ohms Law.

I have an idea, but I thought I might ask for advice from people who probably know more about this than I would. How would I go about this? Re: Installing an impedance switch in a 4x12 cabinet. You can't get an 8 ohm total load with four 16 ohm speakers.

Two 16 ohms speakers wired in parallel will give you an 8 ohm total load, so if you wanted to wire the cab stereo, you could get 8 ohms per side. The Marshall cab has four 16 ohm speakers, and is switchable between 4 and 16 ohms when run in mono, or 8 ohms per side when run in stereo. You could replicate that setup if you want more flexibility. I'm sure there are wiring diagrams all over the net, but you would probably need a new jackplate with the appropriate switches.

MikeO has it right. Just make sure 2 of the speakers can handle whatever power you're putting onto them. If it's a watt head and they're 25 watt greenbacks, you might be asking for trouble.

Series Wiring - For speakers in series you add the impedances of the speakers together. To determine the wattage you add the wattage of the speakers together. If you were using 2 8 ohm speakers you'd have a 16 ohm cabinet. If you were using 2 watt speakers you'd have watts of power handling. Example of series wiring :. Parallel Wiring - Speakers of equal impedances you divide the impedance value by the number of speakers. If you wire 4 16 ohm speakers in parallel you'd have a 4 ohm cabinet.

At one point, I owned six 4x12 cabinets. That said, I became so infatuated with how nicely the standard-sized 30"x30" boxes stack together to build a wall, I grabbed anything I could get my hands on. I came to that outrageous number of 4x12 cabs because I bought them used or empty, and then filled them with my own speakers and wiring. Maybe you want to build a wall of cabs yourself and take the upgrade route like I did. Maybe you need some help with wiring said cabs.

In the above diagram, the impedance of the subs add together. The negative of one speaker connects to the positive of the other.
