Audiomaster bbc ls3 5a loudspeaker

The drivers in particular are in excellent condition see pictures ; they still sound superb and, as a professional sound engineer, I have tested them with REW acoustic software and a measurement microphone and can confirm they have no issues at all. They have been in one office of a research facility for many years and most of their life have only been used for analysing spoken word recordings. This pair is very rare version of the Audiomaster and have a black back and a slightly different brown grilles. If it's a dealbreaker I will open these up - but I'd rather not as a quick test revealed the screws are pretty firmly embedded and have almost certainly never been unscrewed and I would be worried about damaging them if I used too much force. I am very certain they haven't ever been opened up or tampered with in any way - the research facility simply would have chucked them out and got another pair back in the day rather than repair them. I will post internationally and will pack the speakers professionally but if specialist postage is required then the cost of postage customs, insurance etc must be met and arranged by the buyer otherwise they can be posted through Ebay's Global postage scheme.

I can't say that I listened to all known monitor brands, but was able to check quite some. I would keep myself from speaking about how accurate they are or other usual characteristics, they were just frighteningly 'real', as if the musicians are right in your room. Like Harbeth, Falcon, Graham, Spendor? Amps recommendations will be also be great.

For listening or for a accurate monitor? After playing a piano recording he said the Rogers did not sound anything like a piano, he preferred the Kef's. Anyway if you want that sound the Harbeth probably is closest of the speakers that I have heard. My suggestion for a accurate monitor is to get a 2 or 3 way self amplified pair, the detail is much better and tonal accuracy should be better, you want transparent for monitoring.

Brent Hahn. I've had a pair of Kef 's since the early 80's. I always wanted the real thing, a pair of Rogers, but when I finally got them the difference was minuscule so I flipped them. Kefs turn up for sale from time to time, and they always seem to go for very reasonable prices. Highly recommended. I use a Bryston 3B, btw. I almost tripled the price of the pair that I had but that was some years ago but today you could really make a bundle.

This nostalgia thing with old equipment and records is ridiculous, people are living in a dream world but if you want to be entertained this is one way to do it. It's amazing how suggestible people are, the internet influence and not thinking for themselves are causing this movement. I recall a funny cartoon showing a customer and a hi-fi salesman and the customer says something like this- 'What draws me toward records are the inconvenience and the expense'.

Thank you very much. Timothy Powell. While they sounded cool on prerecorded music, they didn't have the headroom for live recording. I assume that the BBC intended these speakers for classical and jazz recording. For me, they just didn't work out for rock. I traded them for two beyerdynamic M ribbon mics which I still use. How our sonic memory will fails us, what a shock. If the BBC were to design a pair of monitors today they probably would not sound anything like the old design, our references have changed.

It sounds nothing like the older design and can play much louder but they also tweaked some color into it, let's face it it's an anniversary model. However none of the other Kef models have that sound, they're tweaked for neutral.

And forget tube amps, high distortion, low damping factor, lot of color not neutral. I've read that the BBC use Dynaudio monitors, can't recall the model. How our sonic memory fails us? My Kefs sound the same as they ever did, but the sound of records has certainly changed. Of course what I meant was if you don't hear the speaker for, say 10 years, and now hear it, our memory and reality is not the same. Anyway that's how I reacted.

Bob Ross. That would be my suggestion also. Same type form factor but easier to drive and a little more full range. I know Dynaudio made speakers to the spec and I'm sure others did. Might be worth a look. My Studio. Kef might be a good option. You might also consider PMC. However your best bet is probably Harbeth - pricey though.

I am selling some audiomaster ls3 at the moment. Brad Lunde. The had the same components in a slightly different box. I agree that it offered the suggestion of low bass and then the brain filled in the missing parts. The 's were excellent speakers that played loudly and with bass thump. You could work right up to the point where the protection circuit came in and produce a big and loud sound field.

If you want that sound, you probably have to pay the inflated prices now asked for the recreations. Last edited by Plush; 18th April at PM.. River Ki. Reason: missed detail. For natural detail and image like the Kef refs I'd prefer the Geithain RLs - huge improvement and small. Top Mentioned Manufacturers. Facebook Twitter Reddit LinkedIn.

Shorter, and subsequently Dudley Harwood, to develop broadcast quality monitoring speakers that were good enough to assess programme quality. Existing commercial models, which had largely been designed through trial and error, had proved too inconsistent, and also suffered from excessive coloration. Spencer later went on to found Spendor. Writing under the pseudonym F. For this ambitious assessment, live versus recorded judgments complemented stereo listening and laboratory testing see contemporary photo by HFP editor Trevor Preece. Furthermore, design precepts which had proved effective with larger speakers turned out not to apply to such a small model. This is why the frequency response is not flat; the speaker was critically voiced octave-by-octave, so that the whole radiated sound, driver and cabinet effects included, sounded most lifelike. He created a high tech miniature called the Reference with an almost perfectly flat frequency response. The loudspeaker division flourished under the stewardship of such legendary engineers as D. Rumour has it that once this unlikely candidate originally knocked together for a scale model studio experiment officially entered the BBC development programme, it proved really hard to finalise, partly due to variations in driver response.

Thus was born what became the first subcompact monitor. Nowadays when speakers this small can cost tens of thousands of dollars, that would hardly raise an eyebrow, but back then attention was paid. Against all odds and to the surprise of no one more than the designers themselves, the speaker caught the attention of a few audio reviewers, most famously perhaps J. Gordon Holt, whose original rave in Stereophile introduced the speaker to American audiophiles.

LOG IN. Many miles away from sounding bloated. Easy, maybe a tad 'boring' and musical bookshelves. I'm aware that some wave this off as anti-hifi. But that's simply my taste.

The Spendor sounds good to, but my choice was the ProAcs. TAS also enjoy the energy in the bass heard in the Spendor D7 going down to 30 Hz and the generous sized sweet spot.

These loudspeakers should require no introduction, having acquired "classic" status. Or should that be "cult"? There are several reasons for this, but I should say that it's not because of a lack of personal enthusiasm about the model itself - I own several pairs, from Rogers, Charwell and Goodmans, and use at least two pairs every day. A lot
