At some point near , an accordion player named Nicholas Sano, wanted a pickup for his accordion, and Joe designed and patented one of the first pickups for what had until then been a purely acoustic instrument. With the pickup came the need for an amplifier, and so in came the first Sano amps. One prevalent myth is that Sano was in some way affiliated with Ampeg. That isn't the case. Both companies were in operation at the same moment in time, and at one point Sano had considered buying an Ampeg factory that was relocating, but there was no business relationship between the two companies.
There may have been as many as different amplifier models produced, from the company's inception in until its demise in , later on, as rock music came to the forefront, Sano made amps with the usual mid-range boost for electric guitar and keyboards, bass amps, P. December 02, There's no branding, but this US-made New Jersey amp is pretty clearly a Sano product they made a lot of accordion-centric amps. The "crosshairs" design of the pine baffle, asymmetric cut of the box itself, the details and trim of the cabinet, and the amp and slightly-complicated preamp itself are all giveaways. One can see the same control panels and layouts in use on branded Sano products , so it's not hard to connect the dots. Tone-wise, this thing is delicious!
I haven't found any ID marked on this amp but based on the features and online schematics it looks like a 20WR or 25WR 2x12 combo from the s. It was in so-so playing condition when I got it, and I've had it professionally serviced. New 's, GZ34 rectifier, new preamp tubes, and the bad reverb tube was replaced with a Dynakit adapter and similar tube that's not as pricey as the
