After several years I've finally been able to hook up a new set of Klipsch speakers. I haven't yet attached the front 'dust covers' I'm sure there's a more accurate term and was wondering whether they actually affect the sound any, good or bad, or simply keep the external components clean?

Are you referring to the grilles? To me the dust covers are the small domes in the center of the speaker. Regarding the grilles, most of the speakers are designed with the grilles in mind.

Take them off and the speaker may be a bit brighter. I don't take mine off, but I do take them off my subs. The difference in how my subs sound with the grilles on and off is way more than I'd have ever expected. There is significantly more impact and punch with them off.

Yes I can only recall one Higher end speaker that sounds better with the covers on. Disagree with the poster above, as most speakers I have voiced have been assessed and calibrated with the covers off.
