Top review. Paul does Paul. This TV feature was great, Paul fascinated a live audience of some 60 people, performing some of the songs from his new album Chaos and Creation in the Backyard and some of his classics from the Beatles and Wings era. In the last 10 minutes of the show he even recorded a version of Blue Suede Shoes, actually 2, overdubbing bass, guitar, lead guitar, and piano on a drum track, then adding to this instrumental take 2 vocals, one containing his own lyrics, and one remaining faithful to the original ones.

He also showed how The Beatles used a mellotron on Strawberry Fields Forever and, in a hilarious scene, what a mellotron's original purpose was. Details Edit. Release date February 27, United States. Chaos And Creation In the Backyard is a brilliant album. McCartney took George Martin's suggestion to heart, and hired Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich to.

CK Retro Review: Chaos And Creation In The Backyard by Paul McCartney

And it all began with this with cumbersomely-titled album, on which producer Nigel Godrich coaxed Paul to dig deeper, bite harder, and edit more carefully, all while doing his one-man band thing for an album as intimate as the end of the evening and as bracing as the first cold light of day. Here is a song-by-song review:. Not bad, but not earth-shaking either. It has the same kind of shapeshifting quality, at times charging ahead recklessly, at times stopping to ponder its whereabouts with dreamy falsetto vocals. I, on the other hand, kind of like the idea of Paul skidding into the curve with this one, owning up to his tweeness with a Victorian era melody and exaggeratedly proper diction. There are many times on this album where the lyrics somehow deepen within their interesting musical surroundings, and this is one of them. Sounds a little like something Antonio Carlos Jobim might have concocted for Frank Sinatra, which is a good thing. One of many tracks on the album that come at us from a funky perspective, making the familiar sound strange and novel. The verses arch upward hopefully, while the middle eight steps unto the breach, fearlessly bringing our narrator to a much-needed friend.

McCartney wanted a producer who appreciated his storied past but at the same time believed that, at sixty-three, he has a vital future.

Paul McCartney | Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2005)

This album might have perhaps been called Chaos and Creation in the Recording Studio if some of the stories behind it are to be believed. McCartney seemed to be looking for something fresh and new by hiring Nigel Godrich — of Radiohead and Beck fame — to produce his latest record, and he got precisely that when the producer pushed McCartney to ditch his band. This caused stress, for example, with guitarist Rusty Anderson from his regular touring band, but McCartney rolled with it, put his faith in his own talent, and ended up playing all the instruments himself on many of the tracks. He further described working with Godrich as "painful" and "like being pulled through a hedge backwards". And it has to be said that this new path contains some pleasant surprises.

Whether or not you like vinyl records as your audio listening format of choice, the prospect of reissues in that format offers opportunity to reassess, reconsider and review past releases one may have overlooked with fresh eyes. In the case of Sir Paul McCartney, reissues of some of his more recent titles on vinyl — some for the first time in the US — these are a welcome addition for fans of the prolific once-upon-a-Beatle songwriter, singer and performer. That the new reissues seem to have been created with a goodly amount of care is also a plus for fans of the man and the music. In someways — and this is purely my perspective here folks — the album seemed to divide fans at least the ones I talked with. Some of us loved Chaos and Creation In The Backyard for its organic, classic Beatle-Paul-flavored and remarkably introspective songwriting.
