Thread starter pfflam Start date Jul 27, Prev 1 … Go to page. First Prev 15 of 16 Go to page. LordByron The Dude abides! Messages 9, The Specialist arrived at my office this morning. I wasn't able to play it but a few minutes after the office cleared off before I had to head home.
Initial impressions: at very low volume and low power setting through the Greenback-filled Vox cab I have here at work was promising. Bright with tone a noon. Harmonically rich. I definitely looking forward to cranking it up later and seeing where the hair and grit start coming on and how the grind sounds.
I was briefly able get the volume still at low power up to around noon, where the guitar was right at the edge of breakup. By changing pick dynamics, I could dance back and forth over the edge. Lots of tweed-like chime mixed with a good dose of breaking-up Vox grind.
And at least through noon on the volume, the harmonic complexity and sweetness of the tone just increased as the volume went up. I am sure that somewhere after noon it will start to compress, but at least through noon, not so much. The tone is, in a word or so , f-ing beautiful! I may not be able to test the Creamback at home until this weekend, depending on what's going on in the house this evening.
I am looking forward to some extensive play time this weekend, though. Update on the At Mars Specialist At the end of the work day, I got to spend a few minutes with the amp still in lower power, but being able to crank the volume up to around noon. All excellent, there. I nice hybrid of tweed and Vox tones. Just the right balance of chime and grind. One thing is clear. I took it home and got it set up in the Bat Cave. Everyone was home and doing stuff, so I was relegated to headphone only, through the OX.
I've got a great preset on the OX for 2x12 silverbell cab, miced with a SM57 and a U87 with a touch of Plate for a sense of space. I flipped the amp into full power mode and started playing around with it at different Volume and Tone levels using several different guitars. From null to noon, the amp was as good or better in full power mode. Pretty much everywhere from through on the Volume was magically delicious, with slightly varying levels of grit and hair progressing in a nicely linear fashion.
Up through noon, the was relative little squish and the tone, even as it gained up, was very dynamic and harmonically rich. With my double-bound FrankenTele with the Fender N3 pickups the amp sounded even better. Just the right amount of aggressive cut in the bridge position. With the Band, that combo will cut like a knife! Lots of pickup hum the amp's noise floor is a bit on the high side across the board, but this was bad and it just did not exhibit the dynamics with the Specialist that I get with the Tex EF86 or the Kitchen Sink.
Over all, not a big deal, as I don't need this to be my everything amp and it sounded so good with both the HH Tele and the more traditional Teles, I could forgive its foibles with this one guitar. Where things got a bit weird with the amp was when I started exploring the Volume area above noon. Oddly, right after noon and I mean immediately the amp starts compressing heavily, getting darker and squishier as the Volume goes up.
Back it down to noon or below and the above-described magic returns. Turn the amp all the way up and at the very highest levels it starts sounding like I have dark, kind-of spitty fuzz engaged I did not and then, maxed out, it actually starts gating a little. It wasn't bad sounding, per se, it just VERY much was not what I expected based on its characteristics were up through noon, and isn't exactly what I was hoping for in that higher volume range.
I've never had a tube amp behave like this. Frankly I don't know if this is just how the circuit works or if there is something going wrong in there. Could this be a power tube issue? Something else? I need to do some more experimentation this weekend, to make sure this was not user error I don't think it is or other equipment issues maybe something with the OX? I'll keep reporting in on this as I poke around more.
In the meantime, let me know if this sounds like something obvious that I should be looking for or if it sounds like this is normal for the circuit for anyone with better knowledge of electrons and wires. I cleaned it out and plugged it in. The included home modified chord was a little crude but serviceable, and there was some unpleasant noise which I attributed to loose screws, and quickly rectified.
It sounds great with any low watt head. The projector itself is a Not the most popular for conversions and probably one of the most crowded inside, considering this model had the recording function as well as a more versatile eq circuit. I was happy just to have found the speaker cabinet to be honest. The projector I likely saved from the dumpster. Last edited: Mar 14, James said:.
Shane S Member. After years for searching one of these after seeing Colin Cripps in , I finally found this on my local Craiglist a couple weeks ago.
After speaking with Colin, it is on its way back to Toronto to TEX amps for the complete Bernie conversation and will be mounted in a 1x10 combo cab. I will post pictures once I have it back. HotBluePlates Member. Messages 12, Turn the amp all the way up and at the very highest levels it starts sounding First off, it's worth embracing the fact there's not necessarily "something to fix" here.
Instead, you probably need to be aware of how the amp responds at the different Volume control settings so you can either use or avoid what the amp naturally does at those settings. The output tubes transition from mild distortion to heavy distortion, and the clamping of the phase inverter forces it to distort if it hadn't started already.
However, signal peaks have hit a hard limit, and compression with or without sag is certain and heavy. This causes the bias on the output tubes to shift, generally closer to cutoff. There is some finite amount of time the output tubes require to recover from this condition.
You've now pushed the output tubes into "grid blocking" or "blocking distortion" where part of the output signal is literally missing. When you heard the "Gating sound" and probably some of that spitty sound before the gating effect , your output tubes were hard-blocked because of grid-current bias-shift, and the output tubes took a moment to start conducting again.
To turn-down louder signals so they don't slap the tubes silly!

The third Disney animated feature film , it consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski , seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film's Master of Ceremonies who introduces each segment in live action. Disney settled on the film's concept in as work neared completion on The Sorcerer's Apprentice , originally an elaborate Silly Symphony cartoon designed as a comeback role for Mickey Mouse , who had declined in popularity. As production costs surpassed what the short could earn, Disney decided to include it in a feature-length film of multiple segments set to classical pieces with Stokowski and Taylor as collaborators.
