CanJam encompasses a series of headphone shows that take place at various locations around the world. The SoCal show, held March 19 to 20, hosted about 60 exhibitors, plus a surprising number of new products. The show covered ten meeting rooms plus a large tented pavilion, in which headphone, earphone, and headphone-amp manufacturers sat side-by-side at tables showing off their latest wares. Here are the new and recently introduced products from CanJam SoCal that I thought were the most interesting. All prices in USD.

Icon Audio HP8 Mk.II headphone amplifier, the new sonic iconic edition

The product was loaned to me free of charge for the review purpose in exchange for my honest opinion. Manufacturer website: Cayin. Available for sale on MusicTeck.

I was introduced to Cayin products over 4 years ago when I reviewed their portable C5 amp which I still use to this day. But Cayin is not only known for their Portable HiFi audio, but also many award-winning desktop sources and amplifier systems they have been designing and manufacturing over the last 25 years since when Zhuhai Spark Electronic Equipment Co.

Cayin parent company was founded. Cayin wanted to be unique by challenging themselves with being the first manufacturer to introduce a portable DAP with dual sound signature design based on using both solid state and triode vacuum tubes.

I do have to warn you, this is going to be longer than usual review. Even regardless of a small selection of options, people still spend months researching and comparing. Overall, the review is clearly partitioned with bold headlines, multiple pages, and the index of where you want to jump if you prefer to skip a section.

As usual, I would like to acknowledge the packaging details since I see that Cayin put a lot of thought into the presentation of their latest flagship product, besides just a protection during the shipping to your doorsteps.

N8 arrived in a large size cube shaped box with a silver outer shell that had a cutout window at the top, revealing the sketch drawing of the DAP on top of the actual storage box. I thought it was clever to have the storage box cover open along an angled line instead of the usual boring straight cut, giving it a little more dramatic opening presentation. With N8 out of the secure foam storage tray, you quickly realize the heft of the weight in your hand, but more about it later. What impressed me the most was not only the presentation of the box, but the content of the included accessories where you know right away you are dealing with a premium product.

As expected, you will find a very comprehensive Users Guide, along with a warranty and QA certificate, and a few hi-res audio labels. Underneath the foam tray with N8, you will find another storage tray with a tempered glass for the display screen and a leather case probably pleather?

I know that my review unit is part of the early production batch where the case had a bit of a fit issue. But I have been reassured by Cayin that issue was corrected moving forward. All these accessories are useful for any DAP, but Cayin went a step further by including custom adapter cables as a bonus accessory kit. These will not work with your smartphone or other USB-C equipped devices.

But I do remember it was very impressive, in a whole different category when compared to SPK. How is the compatibility with MacOSx? All daps need a burn in to condition their caps, and in this case tubes.

Cayin hybrid amplifier

For the record I had no clue what I was doing and they looked nice and sound great, guess I just lucked out. My main complaint about my current system is that sometimes after I listen for several hours the Elex feels uncomfortable. I have seen the amp being reduced in price and i think that might be great for what I want in classical sense however I am not sure what to pair it with. I think I would like something warmer. Better bass for Pop and Edm. Light or has a better system since this headset seems to compress the sides of my head bones behind my ears after hours which feels awful and i have to take them off. Rather than recommending specific gear I would suggest doing quite a bit of research, watching youtube reviews, going to a local headfi meet, going to a local hifi shop, and be willing to buy used. I did not like the 6xx for classical though since the sounstage felt compressed to me. I been considering that.

Review: Cayin HA-1A MK2 tube headphone amp

II has been a longstanding favourite for those looking for a suitable headphone amplifier. The great news is that this successful design has now been upgraded. Utilising the same 12AX7 and 6SN7 valves despite the deceptively different glass casing shape , the chassis has been enlarged excluding buttons and sockets to x x mm from the original x xmm while the weight has increased from 5kg to 7kg. The increase in chassis size provides more room for component layout, helping to lower noise, while half a dozen circuit design improvements also bring potential sonic benefits. The new power supply transformer is also larger with a tweaked design, hence the extra weight. Another reason for that is the slab of copper that sits on top of the chassis adding aesthetic and damping benefits while the rear of the chassis adds a pair of inputs to form a loop , providing additional connectivity options. II is one of the best headphone amps on the market so what better testing reference is there than…itself!
