The rear panel carries a set-and-forget bass level control and a record output that doubles as a mixing input. Due to the lack of gain, you can't plug in a microphone for karaoke sing-along, but you could certainly hear alert tones from your computer if you connected your sound card to the radio. On the front panel are a headphone minijack and a switch that cycles through normal stereo, "wide" stereo, and mono for clearer reception of poor FM signals. However, the Bose radio performed better with AM stations.

David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. Messages: Location: Wilton, CT. Last edited: Feb 18, When I read the obituary it hurt. It was as if I had lost an old friend. Who would take his place in the world of Toys? I have been, and still am, a person addicted to toys. If I am a toy addict, Henry was an enabler. At the time I did not know that the Co-Founder of Acoustic Research was Henry Kloss and that he was the person running the company when it was designed.
His first speaker, the AR-1, was the first acoustic suspension loudspeaker built. It produced clean bass equal to speakers many times its size and price. Anton Hoffmann found KLH. A few years later I bought my father a gift for his birthday. He was hard of hearing, so I got him the only table radio that could put out a decent volume without distorting.
The KLH name became known for high quality audio equipment. In , the KLH-6 Speakers were considered among the best bookshelf speakers made. I think it was about that time that I heard the name Kloss. The speakers were AR3s, which were the original Kloss-designed AR1 woofer with added mid range and tweeters. The one item that I longed for was a quality tape deck that could allow me to make copies of records.
Unfortunately, high-end tape decks at that time cost a small fortune. The price was under two hundred dollars! Again Henry provided the right toy at the right time.
Today digital audio allows perfect copies, but in , this was breaking the state-of-the-art in consumer audio. It was in that I received a bonus from my company.
Before the X-Box, before Play Station, my friends and I were skiing and playing tennis and golf using the Intellivision game set and the 6-foot screen that my Kloss video boasted. It was the last item that I bought that Henry was involved in. You were a genuine engineer, plus a person who's goal in life was driven to provide the world with affordable audio and video products.
Henry's son, David Kloss said, "His real big thing was not to make money, ever. It was to pay bills and get great stereos for the masses. Beside David, his two daughters, Margot Rothmann and Jennifer Hummel, and seven grandchildren survive him. His wife Jacqueline Sweeny Kloss died last year. Frank Greenhalgh February 14, About the Author Frank Greenhalgh has been working in power supplies and systems for 38 years.
He has many impressive accomplishments and patents. Over the years he has made significant contributions to Trio Laboratories where he held the position of Chief Design Engineer and was then promoted to Vice President. This no-comromise high-end radio was designed by Henry Kloss and set the standard for hi-fi table radios and was the first high selectivity FM radio. It was only made for a few years after it was introduced in the early s. Connection via RCA-type jack. IMHO: Not a very attractive design!
This is what happens when an audio company is "taken over" by a home appliance company. Note the continued use of the vernier tuning dial; a Henry Kloss design trademark. Unfortunately, the white plastic cases of the Model tends to "yellow" with age.
FM-stereo only No AM. The speaker is now a two-way design. This is a very rare model. Note use of "new" KLH brand logo.
Used on a daily basis for 16 years. Retired in favor of a KLH radio. Used real wood, walnut veneer case. Overall appearance is very different for a Henry Kloss design. An analog clock radio. You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content. Share This Page Tweet.

Kloss was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and received an engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the early s, he partnered with engineer Edgar Vilchur, his former teacher, to form Acoustic Research. They developed a revolutionary product, the AR His next venture, in the s, was KLH, a company he formed with two partners that reimagined the radio. I have never really licked the radio because it has way too much base for my taste. I can send the radio back to CSW and they will fix it or I can try to do something with it my self. What would be needed to replace the sub with just a normal woofer? I think parts express has one that would swap right in.

I have a Model 88 that sounds fantastic when you first turn it on, but after a few minutes it goes completely silent, but you can get it back by adjusting the volume up or down. Volume controls are digital, so it's not something simple like a dirty volume control pot. I do not have a schematic nor is there one available to my knowledge.
