Note: If you are a regularly admitted UIC student and wish to enroll in this course, you must enroll in the campus section of the course by using Student Self-Service. Credits: 3 undergraduate semester credit hours or 4 graduate semester credit hours. Description: In this course, we review theories in bilingual development, sociolinguistics, and language teaching in order to understand best practices in, and develop coherent materials for, teaching Spanish to heritage language learners. This course is taught in Spanish. Prerequisites: Consent of the instructor for pre-identified students only.

Resources for Spanish immersion and heritage learners

The learning strategies of language learners have been researched extensively. See, e. After teaching high school Spanish in the Twin Cities for a few years, she returned to Fort Collins, Colorado where she has been teaching Spanish and Spanish for Heritage Speakers classes since She started the heritage speaker program at her school, and with her friend and colleague Mary Beth Johnson, has helped develop the program into four levels grades and six sections and offer students opportunities to earn college credit and the Seal of Biliteracy. Adrienne presents regularly at local, state, and national conferences. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two young sons. After a year of teaching in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System, she decided to put her teaching career on hold to move to Costa Rica to work on her Spanish for nine months.

The SHL curriculum revolves around the students, as it offers them opportunities to know and understand themselves: life experiences, values, and how to meet their linguistic, social and emotional needs, and academic plans.

Heritage speakers

Cushing-Leubner and J. Eik Diggs offer, I have been able to develop three levels of Spanish heritage language classes. The resources that I have been provided with have allowed me to create a class where students feel heard and safe. They show you critical approaches and sample lessons. I was able to see how they used exemplary curriculum to engage students and create life-long learners. They have awesome projects that allow students to explore their identities and histories. I learned a lot about social justice content based instruction and getting the students involved in the work.
