The new Axe-FX has all the functionality and tonal quality of the old model, and then some. The introduction of the original Axe-FX unit into the pantheons of guitar FX processors was akin to the invention of the wheel.
The new unit is like having four wheels and racing into the abyss. The new Axe-Fx made my head spin. Amazing amp feel and endless tone. It truly is a quantum leap… a major milestone in guitar technology. The Axe-Fx was a game changer for us both live and in the studio. The Axe-Fx completely and forever changed the way I look at guitar processing. The new model takes everything I love about the old one to the next level. All of the FX sound richer and the new interface makes it even easier to use. My rig has a new openness and clarity and sounds so much better as a result. The quality of all the effects is superb. There is great depth and transparency, and excellent imaging that makes listening with in-ear monitoring a wonderful aural experience.
The Axe-Fx is a tone generating powerhouse. It always delivers the goods. Mike Keneally and I both have them integrated into our live rigs. We wanted to hate the Fractal.
All that work formulating and honing the Metallica guitar sounds was going to be lost. It opened the door to way more options than we had ever had before. In short WOW. This is the best my guitar has ever sounded. It makes you sound a better player. It actually breathes… responds to the touch. So no matter who tries to get what out of me…. Fractal Audio has finally achieved the goal of emulating real tube amps.
You can achieve sounds that you would be hard pressed to get out of an amplifier. For The Madness of Many we had all these amazing high end amps at our disposal and were pretty committed to recording with them, but we found we were able to arrive at the tones we wanted with the Axe-Fx. In fact all of our albums have been recorded using the Axe-Fx.
On my newest record, after exhaustively micing up a dozen great amps in the studio, I actually chose to re-amp my signal and use the Axe-Fx III, which I preferred to all the amps.
It is a total solution for me, and my life is literally better for it. These and many other great players use Fractal Audio Systems products.

Most guitar players start out with a setup that goes something like this:. You have a guitar, a cable, a small maybe mid-sized combo amp and perhaps a pedal or two. But what you'll quickly realize is that the pros and most who have been playing for an extended period of time don't set their gear up that way. Herman Li's guitar rig. Image via Guitar. Amp modellers are guitar DSP effects units that emulate the sound of a range of amplifiers and speaker cabinets. Only a few years ago amp modelling was not widely accepted amongst guitarists, with it's often unconvincing and thin sounding tones, but now with greater research and modern technology even the most die-hard axemen have given in to the latest amp modelling products. Amp modelling is not restricted to rack-mount guitar effects, but is also included in many desktop effects units, amplifiers, pedals and even computer software. Performing just as well on stage as in the studio, amp modelling gives you the convenience of many different sounding amplifiers and speaker cabinets all in one unit.
Cab: an informal term given to cabinets, these contain one or more speakers. Castors: the small wheels on the base of a unit that allow it to be moved more easily. Combo: a combo consists of an amplifier and one or more speakers contained in a cabinet. Proper earthing leads to a reduction in unwanted noise and ensures product safety. Frequency and frequency response : the number of waves produced by a source each second.
A guitar amplifier or amp is an electronic device or system that strengthens the weak electrical signal from a pickup on an electric guitar , bass guitar , or acoustic guitar so that it can produce sound through one or more loudspeakers , which are typically housed in a wooden cabinet. A guitar amplifier may be a standalone wood or metal cabinet that contains only the power amplifier and preamplifier circuits, requiring the use of a separate speaker cabinet—or it may be a "combo" amplifier, which contains both the amplifier and one or more speakers in a wooden cabinet. Guitar amplifiers can also modify the instrument's tone by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain frequencies, using equalizer controls, which function the same way as the bass and treble knobs on a home hi-fi stereo, and by adding electronic effects ; distortion also called "overdrive" and reverb are commonly available as built-in features. For electric guitar players, their choice of guitar amp and the settings they use on the amplifier are a key part of their signature tone or sound.
