Whether you just bought an electric guitar for the first time or are a pro looking for a new sound, it's time to buy a new amplifier! This can be a fun process, but it can also be a little bit overwhelming. You'll have some important decisions to make. One of the first choices to make is whether you want to get a head and cabinet setup or a combo amplifier.

Finding the best combo amp for you can be tough. The right electric guitar feels like an extension of your limbs, whereas finding a great combo amp can take a whole lot longer. A combo is an amp that contains both the amplifier and speaker in the same box - making it ideal for small spaces or where portability is a consideration. A lot of amps on the market are configured as a head and cabinet, meaning that the bit that actually amplifies your signal is separate from the speakers that your signal comes out of.

Panel joints can be simple butt-joints, screwed and glued, with reinforcing battens you can use more sophisticated joints if your woodworking skills are up to it!

Having a separate guitar amp head and speaker cabinet unlocks a world of tonal variety, versatility, and options for playing shows in differently sized venues. If you're on a festival stage or a huge hall, one or more 4x12 cabs is definitely what you want. For smaller stages and club gigs, a single 1x12 or 2x12 cab will suffice. Be sure to match the impedance of the guitar cabinet with the impedance of your head, and experiment with different power ratings, and speaker configurations to get the tone you desire.
