The Workshop aims to further develop the MMS networking activities in the different Institutes, presenting undergoing work using modern methods of MMS and creating a plattform for discussion on themes of specific and general interest. Depending on the contributions submitted, parallel workshops on more specific topics shall be planned in addition to plenary sessions. For all the details of the program including titels and abstracts of the talks see here ». Leibniz MMS Days As soon as a new date has been fixed, it will be announced here.

The biggest of the four major moons of Jupiter — Ganymede, shown above — is three-quarters the size of Mars and larger than any other moon in our solar system. But even it is dwarfed by the planet itself, bigger than a thousand Earths.

When a solar eclipse happens on Jupiter, the planet virtually subsumes the moon, which casts a small black shadow against Jupiter's surface. But on March 28th, , three of those moons converged for a truly gorgeous series of shots caught by the Hubble space telescope.

The video below, shot at various near-infrared wavelengths, shows a triple eclipse casting shadows on the surface of Jupiter.

And a fourth major moon, Europa, remains invisible on the other side of the planet. Subscribe to get the best Verge-approved tech deals of the week. IKP-2 Neutrino Group. A Missing Piece of the Puzzle for the Solar Engine: Discovery of the CNO Fusion In the core of the sun, at a temperature of about 15 million degrees, hydrogen nuclei fuse together to form Helium nuclei via different chain reactions. In these nuclear processes, along with enormous amounts of energy, neutrinos are emitted as byproducts. It has performed a complete neutrino spectroscopy of the so-called "pp-chain" , the dominant energy producing process in our star. Now the scientists from the Borexino collaboration have for the first time observed the solar neutrinos from another fusion process, the so-called CNO cycle. CNO neutrinos hold the key to a lot of open questions, including the abundance of heavy metals in the solar core, a burning problem in present-day solar physics. The group is lead by Livia Ludhova , one of the two scientific coordinators of the Borexino collaboration, who also co-coordinated the whole CNO analysis. The group contributed in a whole range of different areas of the analysis, from the data validation and selection, optimisation of the Monte Carlo simulation, preparation of the final real and Monte Carlo data sets, determination of the Bi background constraint, multivariate spectral fit, systematic studies, conversion of the measured CNO interaction rate to the CNO neutrino flux on Earth, evaluation of the sensitivity to CNO neutrinos , up to the preparation of the final manuscript. This groundbreaking discovery is the result of many years of cooperation and effort among the members of the Borexino Collaboration, who have worked hard over the years to maintain the quality of the collected data, based on the exceptional radiopurity and thermal stability of the detector.

Tens of millions of people in the United States hope to view this once-in-a-lifetime event — the August 21, , total solar eclipse. This is the first total solar eclipse to cross the entire country since The last eclipse seen on the U. To commemorate the event, the U. This first-of-its-kind stamp for the U.

Box , Greenbelt, MD GMAO uses sea surface temperature, wave height differences, and wind speed measurement data from all the current Earth observation satellites to build a 3-dimensional picture of the state of the atmosphere and oceans. Predicting things like El Nino events, the availability of shipping routes, droughts, floods, and agricultural impacts can provide economic returns in the billions of dollars. Reanalysis is an emerging field that assimilates historic satellite data into modern day models to set the baseline for climate change analysis. In addition to weather forecasts, the model traces emissions released by fires, dust from deserts, and sea salt from oceans that are spread by winds around the world.

Print Send Add Share. E2 lcc. Freilich, his wife, and other family members were in attendance. In addition, panel discussions emphasized lessons learned from their interactions with Freilich, international collaborations which Freilich played a key role in enhancing during his NASA tenure , and new directions and innovations for future Earth science research and applications. Sentinel-6A Michael Freilich will observe and record global sea level changes and will be joined by an identical Sentinel-6B satellite slated to launch in , for a total of ten years of targeted observations. Freilich lauded the series of sea-level altimetry missions as a tremendous example of the power of international collaboration. Although the radar failed in July , the radiometer is operating nominally and continues to provide global mapping of soil moisture with accuracy, resolution, and coverage that exceeds the capability of other on-orbit systems.

The eclipse will occur on Monday, Aug. A dog in England during the eclipse. From bees to chickens, animals sometimes act a little wacky when the sky goes dark.

What does Science have to do with Diplomacy, Inclusion and Development? Science, although universally striving for objectivity, cannot always be regarded as isolated from politics or society. Current discussions about the cause and effect of climate change are just the most prominent examples. Science and policy exist in a two-way relationship: Science can lead to policy change, but policy can also stimulate science. Not only can research be met with ignorance, it can be met with criticism and contestation. While criticism bolstered by facts and scientific methods is conducive to the scientific discourse and innovation, contestations merely based on emotions and political calculations can be harmful.

Even more difficult, at least for me, is explaining them to others.

Decades make you look. It is also a time of critical reflection to see how far. As GEST was awarded for a ten year period, we know that this will be a critical year for. UMBC research portfolio. The faculty and staff who are associated with GEST are about the same.
