Accuphase E-405
The Accuphase E, released in October , was designed from the outset with the goal of advancing the state of the art in integrated amplifier performance. To achieve this aim, the amplifier consists of a separate pre-amplifier and power amplifier section which are housed in a common enclosure.
Even the power transformers are, rectyfying circuitry etc, are separate for the two sections. In the power amplifier section, five pairs of transistors are used in a parallell push-pull configuration to ensure drastically improved drive capability. The advantages of this approach are apparent not only under extreme low-impedance load conditions, but also when driving speakers in the 4 to 8 ohm range.
Drive current supply always remains stable and reliable. The pre-amplifier section features the same design as a high-end stand-alone pre-amplifier, with a 20dB line amplifier stage and 30dB phono stage which are powered by their own power transformer and rectifiers. Separate stabilizer circuits ensure totally uniform current supply and prevent interference between the respective amplifier stages.
It produces a very detailed, warm and full sound at the same time. I am currently running my amplifier with an Accuphase DP, a very musical and analogue vintage CD player from the same period as the E, and a pair of unique Swedish concrete speakers — Rauna Leira II. Viewed separately, each of these units are known for their clarity and live-like sound although you probably have never heard of the Rauna Leira before…. Taken together, the sound is definitely not bad, but can be improved.
There is something missing, which I am trying to figure out. The cables I have for the moment are of unfamiliar origin, and I think that the sound can perhaps be improved by simply changing these. I have also bought new second hand speakers, Dunlavy Aletha, which I would like to test in my system.
If you have had any experiences with any of these models, please do not hesitate to write a few lines and share your views. All views, positive as well as negative, are welcome. December 28, at pm. April 18, at pm. April 21, at am. Thanks for your comments.
Its overall performance is still today among the best that money can buy. Interesting set-up you have there. The Alon V-MkII are supposed to be very musical speakers with outstanding imaging and staging characteristics.
Like the Aletha, they are neither warm and euphoric in character, nor cool and analytical, but simply as close to tonally neutral and uncoloured.
Just like I prefer… I have not yet tried the orpheous tri wire speaker cables. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. You are commenting using your Twitter account. You are commenting using your Facebook account.

Ok that sounds all very well, but very theoretical and perhaps boring How does this heavy 26kg beauty actually sound in real life? New speaker cables and new inter-connectors have been ordered, but not yet received. Last but not least, I may get a second-hand Accuphase E, with a view to replacing my E To be continued…..

Never pair vintage electronics with modern speakers......

David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can.

RELATED VIDEO: Accuphase E-202 Vintage Integrated AmplifierVintage Accuphase is quite simply the best vintage gear available anywhere. It was built originally in the 70s with absolutely the best possible parts and extreme attention to detail. I have restored many different brands of vintage audio gear including Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, and McIntosh and none of them come close to the build quality of the vintage Accuphase gear. A quick google search will yield overwhelming praise for this gear but it is essential that it is restored properly in order to maintain the high standards of the original piece. Many people do partial restorations or recaps, but I truly believe that Accuphase gear should be completely restored insuring a long and spectacular life. I review on this site my process for restoration of the C preamplifier, the P Amplifier and the E integrated amplifier.
Vintage Accuphase E-202 Integrated Amplifier with Meters
In my last year of high school, my brother came home one day with an old integrated amplifier. His boss at his part-time job where he stripped and refinished old furniture was clearing out his basement and gave it to him. Surplus to requirements. I had a system of my own already but do remember thinking it looked somewhat cool. Black brushed metal face plate. Silver knobs.

Previously, I thought otherwise, thank you for an explanation.
Yes, really. So happens. Let's discuss this question.
