Amplifier recommendation for Rega Planar 3 amplifiers, receivers and loudspeakers. Amplifier recommendation for Rega Planar 3 Post by rlisanti » 29 Mar Hi, I have recently returned to vinyl after many years absence.
No space for TT, kids, etc. I bought a used Rega Planar 3 and had my Mission Cyrus 1 amp serviced and now very pleased with the result. I'm beginning to realise that my amp is probably under-powered and it takes a fair amount of cranking-up the volume to get a decent sound. So thinking that I will probably upgrade the amplifier and was looking for something with the same shape and size.
Looking at Mission I could probably stretch to their 6a base model at some point but I suddenly realised that it doesn't have an in-built phono stage. I think they did the PhonoX but looks like it is discontinued now and I am guessing is in addition to the 6a so would be a really expensive for me option. Someone recommended an Edwards Audio box but I haven't heard of them before. It also need a separate phono stage I understand which again increases the cost.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in no great rush but as my existing Cyrus 1 whilst very old is working well but I'd like a bit more oomph to my music. Conservatively rated at 30wpc but have seen reports that it's more like 40wpc. Very warm sounding amp - almost tube like.
There are plenty around and tons of support online if you need it. What Diamonds do you run? Remember, even doubling power only gives 3dB gain. What about adding a subwoofer for a 2.
Would take the strain off the amp and speakers. My speakers are Wharfedale Laser 90 b so pretty old as well. Read some comments somewhere about clipping if the speakers weren't getting enough power? How would I add a sub woofer to this setup? I have one from an surround system that I'm not using but how would I wire that in?
Rather than going for a bigger amp would different speakers be a more sensible buy and have more impact? If an amplifier is overdriven, it reaches the limit of its output max voltage swing , and the output waveforms are cut off at the tops "clipped".
Ideally, if adding a sub, frequencies can be divided electronically at a selected crossover frequency before the power amplifier section I'd say 60 Hz for your speakers , then the low frequencies are fed to the low level input connectors on the sub. With your amplifier, you'd probably have to try connecting the high level input connections to the speaker terminals, then adjusting the sub crossover frequency around Hz to blend it in, as well as matching the level.
A bit rough without a level meter, and probably not Hi Fi, but worth trying. Run the amplifier on flat, and let the sub blend in naturally to reproduce those lower bass frequencies, rather than going overboard like so many Doof Doof car systems! Suddenly my setup sounds fine Probably a task for a more experienced audiophile than me to take on so I'll stick with the setup that I have.
Appreciate the follow-up. Re: Amplifier recommendation for Rega Planar 3 Post by josephazannieri » 05 Apr Yo rlisanti: If you want to keep the Mission 25 WPC amp, you can trade the Wharfedale speakers, which are rated 88dB efficiency for speakers that are rated at a higher efficiency, in the 91 dB plus area.
Increasing your speaker efficency by 3 dB is the same as doubling your amplifier power. Usual rating method is the amount of sound produced by speaker when driven with a signal of 1 watt with measuring device placed at 1 meter from speaker. Figuring out speaker efficiency and comparing speaker efficiency requires careful consideration, and you have to look at ratings closely.
Sometimes they don't say the rating method, and in that case, it's usually 1 watt at 1 meter. You just need to be sure that the speakers you are comparing are uniformly spec'ed.
But if you like the sound of Wharefedales, and you are not pushing them so hard that the amp is distorting You will be able to tell-Dynamics will vanish because amp is pushing beyond its capacity , you can just leave well enough alone. It really depends on your taste for loud sound and whether you like to turn up the bass. Bass boost will suck power like crazy, and may exceed speaker mechanical limits, like Marty McFligh did with his guitar in "Back to the Future.

I know I'm not getting any distortion now at least I can't hear anything obvious but I will probably try and audition some higher rated speakers as you advise and see what I'm missing Really appreciate the advice!

Rega Planar 3/Elys 2 review
New to vinyl? Want a new turntable but not sure what partnering kit you need to go with it? Add in large-scale sound, rich with detail and punchy rhythm, and you've got a great budget turntable. Onkyo's A is a fantastic stereo amplifier for the money and owns a area of the market where there's been a real shortage of talent lately. The design is functional rather than flamboyant, but the captivating, energetic sound is what's crucial here.

I'm a newbie and just getting into vinyl. However, I don't think the Rega Brio is doing the speakers justice. What are your thoughts?
