The circuit is based on fundamental principles: An amplifier takes a voltage and uses the signal input to modulate that voltage, resulting in an increased signal.

A fully tube-based circuit, the design uses amongst other valves, a rectifier, HT voltage stabiliser and, unusually, a B valve for voltage regulation to boot. But what a signal stage! Four dual-triodes, two per channel.

The gain stages are direct coupled and the output is unusual at this price point in using transformer coupling. There are no capacitors at all in the signal path and the result is a pre-amp that can drive just about any load with ease and is unfazed by cable length or impedance-matching issues.

From a practical point of view, there are a generous five pairs of line-level inputs and outputs switchable between truly balanced or single-ended. Construction is of high apparent quality throughout, though it is worth mentioning that the unit is comparatively large for a pre-amp and is anything but light. Actually, make that big. Full stop. There is no remote, and no option for one. To some this might be an issue, but it avoids the inherent compromises of remote circuitry and the additional cost and complexity.

Going a little against current fashion, the circuit also uses a high-quality potentiometer, rather than a switched attenuator. The designer quite rightly in my opinion considers that attenuators offer no benefit, add considerable cost, and most importantly, sacrifice the infinite adjustability of a proper pot. No matter how good an amplifier, there is nothing more annoying than having to play music slightly too quiet or slightly too loud.

Although not one for measurements, I did run some brief tests on the amp. A sine-wave sweep revealed a virtually ruler-flat response curve from around 10Hz to over 20kHz; an impressive performance for any vale amp.

Both sine and square-wave inputs were faithfully reproduced with no apparent distortion visible even at extremely low levels and maximum gain. So, the most important test. How does it sound? Very good indeed. In fact, right up there with some of the very best ever. Comparative listening against a Kondo M7 was interesting.

However, there is no doubting that this is colouration. It is one of those rare components that seem to breathe some life into music, but without sacrificing accuracy or adding anything unecessary. Against some top-end solid-state equipment, the Pure Sound gives nothing away, yet does seem to increase the sound stage a little, certainly in width.

Piano and woodwind in particular always a difficuly feat are rendered superbly and with a sense of reality that is quite startling. Highly musical, ultimately listenable and size apart perfectly practical, this should be right at the top of the shopping list for anyone considering one of the last steps to musical nirvana.

Discuss the review here. Oh and a humble looking Cambridge Audio phono stage.. Heavily modified.. Some people just care about the sound and the price. There are others that care about why things sound good and seek ways to improve what they already have. Very occasionally you chance upon someone in the latter camp that actually knows what they are doing, and is prepared for a modest fee to upgrade your hifi and return it to you better than ever.

Enter Jez Arkless of Arkless electronics. In fact I always considered it a bit of a giant killer in its own right. Vastly improved. I strongly suggest you listen to the stock phono stage before sending it to Jez, you will be amazed at the difference between the albeit very competent stock unit and the modified one.

It took a few minutes. Very different to my old p. I had to adjust to a new experience. It had more.. There was clarity at the edge of each sound which was intriguing. More of everything. The way a cup of coffee snaps everything together, like pulling focus on a camera, all of a sudden I was there.

And a liked it a lot. Gil Scott Heron has a slightly croaky voice. I suppose if someone had suggested it to me I might have agreed. But with the Arkless in place there was no question. Every beat of a drum, every fret move, every cough in the studio.. Details were flying at me and it was grin inducing. Timbre is a hard thing to quantify in words. But the way the timbre of voices and instruments were portrayed was quite exceptional.

Somehow this phono stage digs into the music and pulls more out. You get silky clean sounds, with detail. And that should be what this hobby is about. Finding kit that helps you enjoy your favourite music more. This humble looking bit of kit has had me losing sleep. The unit can be supplied as an MM or MC amp and if you let Jez know which cartridge you are using he will even fine tune the amp to suit!

For those that want to know more technically, please read on. The law of diminishing returns is real and if ever a low cost bit of kit highlighted that, this is it!

Any reference to the P can therefore be taken as applying equally to the P. The Arkless Electronics P re-uses the internal and external wall wart power supplies, sockets, casework and PCB of the original but the actual circuitry of the phono stage is replaced with an Arkless Electronics design.

The standard input capacitors of pF are a bit excessive for some MM cartridges and are replaced with pF. By this means the inputs can be loaded with any desired combination of resistance and capacitance to suit any model of cartridge whether MM or MC.

As standard, a set of loading plugs offering Ohms in parallel with 1nF are supplied and will be a good match for the majority of MC cartridges. Without the plugs the cartridge sees 47K and pF which will suit most MM cartridges.

Extra loading plugs to any customer specified value can be supplied at extra cost at any time. Simply solder the ends of the loop together again to go back to MC….. Customers can of course specify whether the amp is to be set to MC or MM as supplied. Those who would rather not dabble with even this limited amount of soldering can return the unit to have it carried out here but a small fee will be chargeable.

Output level could be a bit marginal with low output cartridges in original P. The RIAA stage itself has been completely recalculated to give tighter accuracy to the RIAA standard and to work at impedance levels more conducive to good sound. The capacitors used in the RIAA network are a critical aspect of the design of any phono stage and Arkless Electronics have had close tolerance, low loss, polystyrene capacitors made to order for this application.

The output relay for switch on delay to avoid thumps etc is also bypassed. These can both be left functioning if a customer requests it but it is recommended that they are removed on sound quality grounds. Further upgrades can be carried out for any customer who has already purchased the Arkless P and who wants to take things further.

So, it was with this goal in mind that I embarked on my mission. So, next on the agenda? A better phono stage of course!

This had the added advantage of removing any need for couriers from the transaction! Its own MC gain stage even handled the ultra-low output of the Io1 without being troubled, or indeed shown up by the more exotic separates available to play with that day. However, that was in a very different system to my own, so my real opinion of it had to wait until I got home.

From the off, the Vida demonstrated all of the qualities I had heard at the bake off. Vivid, rich tones, beautifully reproduced, without the slightest hint of grain or etched upper frequencies, often associated with solid state phono stages.

Solid bass notes and captivating midrange shone out from a completely silent background. One day, I really must check that there are no valves inside, such is the richness and smooth delivery of music that the Vida provides. Aesthetically, the Vida is typically Japanese. Clean, simple lines with an attractive wood surround. Build quality is faultless and you somehow get the impression that it is simply going to work, forever! Yes, without a doubt.


modded Allnic H1200 sounding thin, any ideas why?

It happened by chance when ordering a new set of valves from Richard at Lotus Hifi for my Allnic H, he was going on holiday and offered to lend me the new entry level H and top of the range H Phono stage to try against my H for a few weeks. This is the review of the H, Allnics new entry point in the vinyl replay market. It is the successor to the H pretty much only in name, it has a new look, valves, circuit and style. As with all Allnic products I have seen, the case work is excellent and could easily be on a far more expensive product.

I will be driving the amp from an Allnic H phono stage which should give me fro. Without a schematic or, as you say, an instruction manual.

All these devices use the same MC step-up transformers! The Original: The H The price to performance ratio was incredible. Unfortunately, though the H was selling extremely well in North America and Europe, especially for a unit manufactured by a company not really known outside Asia at the time, its long and successful production run finally ended in in the middle of the 6moons review. The AUT The AUT, a stand-alone, two channel step-up transformer was first released around the time of the H How many dealers do that!?

I would even take a decent pre amp that also contained an excellent phono stage, but I am open to offers of any kind. So as you can see all types there and with not being able to listen before I buy it looks like I might have to buy something that I can easily sell on once tried out. All very good stages at below your price range.
