In this lesson you will learn the main Russian pronunciation rules. Russian pronunciation can become a nightmare for people who approach it too seriously. Yes, you would sound like a foreigner, but Russian native speakers will still understand you. Much more important is to stay motivated and become confident in Russian. Nothing special about it. Try to pronounce them slowly.

So, what happens exactly? Compare these sounds and pay attention to articulation. The ones on the left are voiced, and the ones on the right are unvoiced. Now comes another Russian pronunciation rule: sometimes voiced consonants turn to their unvoiced versions. And it works the other way around! If the unvoiced consonant is followed by the voiced one, it turns to its voiced equivalent. If it seems too difficult, just relax and put pronunciation rules away for some time.

5 reasons why native speakers need to learn to speak English internationally
Pronunciation is quite possibly the most neglected area of language teaching. Part of the problem, of course, is that after a certain very formative point, time spent on pronunciation reaps very little reward, especially when compared to other areas of language that one could work on. Imagine the degree to which you might expect your communicative competence to be boosted if you were to spend a hundred hours studying, developing and revising vocabulary — and then compare and contrast this with what you might expect to gain in communicative terms if you were spend those hundred hours working on your pronunciation. Partly this is because — unlike other areas of language skill with the possible, arguable exception of writing, of course , pronunciation is essentially a motor skill, and ultimately develops as a result of practice, practice and practice. And then some more practice after that — in much the same way as a musician learns a song by going over and over and over the fingering and the strumming and the chords and the notes, drilling them into the muscle memory until they become second nature. When it comes to discrete phonemes, there is often little we can really do in the limited time that we inevitably have with. Research findings on this obviously vary, but there does seem to be a considerable body of evidence to suggest that we start being primed in our own first language from our very earliest moments here on earth, and this priming seems to last.
How different is pronunciation across Russia?
Statement of the problem. This article discusses the necessity to follow a certain pronunciation norm in language teacher education in Russia. However, when choosing a pronunciation norm for teaching to ELT majors in Russia we should also conform to the existing Russian educational standards. The article also includes the results of a survey conducted among high school students, which has shown that from the point of view of the majority of respondents, a teacher should consistently follow a certain pronunciation norm while teaching English to high school students. Moreover, most respondents prefer the British variant of English as a model of pronunciation to study. Firstly, the article looks at the changes which have happened over the last fifty years in teaching pronunciation at the level of higher education education in Russia. Nowadays the influence of English as an International Language EIL is quite strong, which leads to the worldwide tendency to believe that intelligibility of speech is more important than following a certain pronunciation standard. Results of the study show the modern preferences concerning the variety of English to teach in high school as well as the correlation between a certain teacher's pronunciation and the high school students' opinions about the teacher's professionalism.

Often native speakers are able to fairly accurately determine the country from which the person came, based on his pronunciation. This happens due to the fact that it is common for all of us to use the sounds of our native language in the pronunciation of words of a foreign language, as well as to use articulation models we know from childhood the position of the organs of speech lips, tongue, etc. We pronounce words with stress characteristic of the native language and speak with intonations corresponding to the intonational patterns of the native language. The so-called "Russian mistakes", characteristic of Russian-speaking people studying English , are due to the discrepancy between Russian and English sounds.
