Spaces 2 way

Storage Spaces is the innovation in Windows 8 designed to increase the efficiency and flexibility of disk space management in the newest Windows operating systems. Storage Spaces operates on the level between hardware and virtual drives. Pool is a set of physical drives, on top of which you can create various virtual disks, known as spaces. Slab is a quantum of disk space of MB. All the physical drives in the pool are "sliced" into slabs which are then given to the Storage Spaces driver on request. The driver then assigns slabs to a particular virtual disk known as space.

If I have two physical hard drives in a Storage Spaces pool and a 2-way mirrored virtual disk on them, how can I replace one HDD with a new larger one, without at any point having only a single copy of data? Is there a way to do this without having at any point only one copy of data? Apparently not. So if hd1 fails before the rebuild is finished, the array is lost. There does not seem or I could not find one to be a way to migrate a Mirror volume to a new physical disk in Storage Spaces that would keep it redundant and online in case the remaining old disk dies before the rebuild to the new disk is finished. After inserting the new disk using the names from a test system : PhysicalDisk1 old disk that will be replaced, PhysicalDisk2 old disk that should remain, PhysicalDisk5 new disk the state is:.

I've been using Storage Spaces since almost first days. First just for VDI, since some years for everything. It is really hard to find information how Storage Spcades is acting in reality but some time ago I've found a good explanation for the Three-Way-Mirrors and why it needs five discs as a requirement. It makes sense to me that metadata is looked separately.

Considering adding another 12TB disk with expectations to increase the usable size by about half of the size. To begin with, I am not that clear with the numbers. I tried to do some lab test with 5GB virtual disks on VirtualBox to understand the behaviour. I could not find any documentation for this, only for Server versions which seem a bit different. Windows Home Server was never a particularly popular product, but it did bring some interesting features to the table for the few who used it and became fans. One of these features was called Drive Extender. Its claim to fame was allowing users to pool their system's hard drives so they were seen by the operating system as one large hard drive. This obviated the need to keep track of free space across several disks, and it also allowed users to automatically mirror their data to multiple disks at once, keeping their files safe in the event of drive failure. Microsoft killed Drive Extender not long before pulling the plug on the Windows Home Server entirely , but the intent behind it lives on in Windows 8's new Storage Spaces feature. Early versions of Drive Extender sometimes corrupted data when copying files between drives and mangled file metadata, but the underlying filesystem improvements made to support Storage Spaces should make it much more robust, at least in theory. A group of physical disks is called a pool, and on top of that pool you can create one or more storage spaces. Each of these will show up to the operating system as a logical disk.

It is similar to a two-way mirror, except that it writes three copies in three different drives. So, your data is protected from the.
