Adcom amplifier vintage
Together with Stereo Exchange. They can also drive just about anything without much strain or drama. Problem is - they usually need a good amount of work to get another 25 years out of them. We've taken the time to bring them up to speed. While they're not perfect cosmetically, they are working and sounding perfectly. All out of spec parts replaced.

It was manufactured around It's time to take the top cover off. Adcom uses hex screws and they can be difficult to break loose. Be careful as they are easy to strip. With the top cover removed you can see why this Adcom can produce over watts per channel into 8 ohms and watts into 4 ohms. Around the power FET's It looks like something may have been spilled. I used a little water and a cloth to clean it up. Alcohol may affect the thermal grease.

Also, I have no experience with, or opinion on, currently produced Adcom products, or any official affiliation with the company. They seem nice though! As the power supply voltage slowly drains towards zero, there comes a point where the negative feedback collapses, things get all wobbly and the amp oscillates a bit. Again this is due to the fact there is no speaker relay, so your speakers are connected as you hit the power switch. It takes a moment for the amp to stabilize. You may notice your woofer push back and forth a bit. Both channels should behave similarly. These amps are years old now.

The Adcom GFA power amplifier is somewhat unusual in being an affordably priced product that has also received wide acceptance from the "high-end" section of the audio fraternity. The amplifier combines basically conventional circuit design with a number of unusual operating details that set it apart from other high-power amplifiers.
