When using a tube amplifier, you should always connect it to a speaker cabinet before turning it on — or a loadbox. The speaker cabinet 2, 4, 8 or 16 Ohms must always be connected to the corresponding speaker output of your amplifier. Not doing so can lead to partial or complete destruction of the output stage of the tube amplifier. Most tube amp designers protect their products with fuses etc, but some amps do not have sufficient protection in place.

An 8-Ohm load box must be plugged to the 8-Ohm speaker output of the amplifier. When using a Torpedo load box, the power sent to the load is turned into heat, so please follow the cooling recommendation of the load box — failure to do so may cause overheating which can lead to damage, both to the load box and to the amplifier. This term indicates that these products feature a load which can electrically replace the speaker cabinet while safely dissipating transforming into heat the power coming out of the amplifier.

The embedded load in the Torpedo products is reactive: it embeds a specific circuit to simulate the complex impedance of a real speaker. This kind of system is widely used in the industry to silently test amplifiers. If we compare the load box solution to a traditional cabinet miking solution, it is obviously several orders of magnitude quieter, but you will still experience some minor sounds, noises, that have to be taken into account:. The correct use of your amplifier with a load box requires some precautions.

This can lead to faster tube wear and, in some cases, to more serious issues. Therefore, you can reach the maximum volume of your amplifier even if the volume potentiometer is not set at maximum. By reaching the maximum output power of your amplifier, you will hear a lot of distortion, which may not sound as good as you could hope.

In fact, most amplifiers do not sound great at maximum volume. Always keep in mind that your amplifier may not have been conceived to be used at maximum volume for a long time. Running an amplifier at high volume will cause premature wear of the tubes and possible malfunctions or damages to the output stage.

Hello, I use my captor X 8ohm to a Princeton reverb head 8ohm. Can I then connect a speaker 16ohm to the Captor X to use it as an attenuator? Would it be considered a mismatch? This would be a mis-match — as the Captor X is looking at what the speaker is going rather than the amp set in that way — you should be fine, but take it easy!

I have a peavy artist — instructions are mentioned that the speaker and ext are 4 ohms — which captors could fit with that amp? Also I have a spider bass amp with 2 speakers output at 4 ohms and one XLR DI output- same questions which models of captor will fit — I guess the answer is 4 and 8 ohms model — please confirm or precise Regards Michel. As for the bass amp, I assume it is the Ashdown Spyder amp. If so, its power amp is solid state and is rated for a minimum of 4 Ohms.

With this in mind, the best choice is the Torpedo Captor 4 — you will have perfect impedance match in all cases. You will have an impedance mismatch, albeit the tolerable one. This article will give you all the information and precautions you need to take when using an amp and a Torpedo product that are mismatched impedance-wise:.

Thank you very much Jason for your response. Really appreciated Have a good one Michel. I did buy a captor 4 ohms. I want to use it in a silent mode to record my guitar and bass. Unfortunatly, this mode is not working! I have to connect one of the two output to the speakers thru output or db for the DI — XlR output with phantom power or the Line TRS sends some input to my soudcard. Whwn I connect an external speakers both are working — but in silent mode -none are working.

The silent mode is simply not working. Please help or confirm that the unit is defective. Thanking you in advance Michel. Hello I use a Torpedo Captor X, 8 ohms. Regards Markus. Your email address will not be published. Please enable JavaScript to submit this form.

Is the use of a loadbox totally silent?

If we compare the load box solution to a traditional cabinet miking solution, it is obviously several orders of magnitude quieter, but you will still experience some minor sounds, noises, that have to be taken into account: Your guitar or bass strings can be heard. This is obvious, but it can be disturbing, depending on your environment if you are not used to it. You may hear some noise coming out of your Torpedo when playing, like there is a tiny speaker inside the box.

This is perfectly normal and there is no reason to worry. The sound is produced when power goes through the coil of the reactive load embedded on the Torpedo. Such noise is usually not heard, simply because it is normally overcome by the sound coming from the loudspeaker. The Torpedo embeds a fan, as there is quite a lot of power dissipated into heat inside the box. This said, you can consider that, in normal use hearing your guitar through monitors, or headphones , you can barely hear that fan.

Care should be taken when using a load box The correct use of your amplifier with a load box requires some precautions.

When first testing the amplifier at high volume, monitor the color of the tubes and the general response of the amplifier. Red-glowing tubes or any appearance of smoke are signs of a problem that may result in partial or complete destruction of the amplifier. A good habit is to keep the usual volume setup you would use in rehearsal or on stage, rather than just following what the volume potentiometer indicates. How To: Tube Amp Biasing

The Whitestone Audio P Tube Loading Amplifier was developed to bring professional tracking, mix and mastering engineers versatile, elegant, precise and repeatable audio circuit variation. Simply exploiting the sound of some of these analog input and output gain circuits with processing bypassed is often-times just the thing to help bring subtle life or enhanced depth to recorded audio. This was the birth of the true common ancestor of all modern double triodes used in high fidelity amplifiers. The 6SN7 is still in production after over 80 years, for good reason.

Now if you accidentally operate the amplifier without a speaker plugged in, the power resistor acts as a dummy load, absorbing the amplifier's.

It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I don't recall where or from whom, but I heard that switching on an amplifier head without a connected load a cab, that is may cause damage—presumably to the tubes, but perhaps something else, I'm not sure. Is there any truth to this? If not, is there a related problem that might have inspired such caution? It is true that a tube amp should not be operated without a load, i. Solid state amps don't have that problem. The reason is that almost all tube amps use an output transformer, which can produce high voltage peaks if its secondary output winding is not connected, because the energy from the primary from the power tubes cannot 'go anywhere'. So it will be fed back to the primary where the power tubes are connected.

While feedback reduces distortion, it also lowers overall amplifier gain. It might have been considered heresy to reduce the gain through feedback and reduce distortion in earlier tube designs since minimal gain was still extremely expensive prior to the s.

Tube Amps: Load required? (What constitutes a load)

Despite the fact that nearly all facets of the electronics world moved on from vacuum tube technology decades ago, the venerable tube guitar amp remains the favored choice for serious players everywhere. The electric guitar is an incredibly sensitive and expressive instrument, and the player is in direct control of everything with their hands. Bringing together many unique guitar tools in one convenient package, it gives you easy access to diverse creative options that used to require multiple pieces of expensive gear and lots of complicated set up. At the heart of the Waza Tube Amp Expander is a variable analog reactive load, which employs groundbreaking BOSS technologies to outperform the capabilities of any commercial load box previously available. But while you may love it, the resulting sound level is usually just too intense for most practical purposes. To tackle this pesky volume issue, two commonly employed solutions are load boxes and power attenuators. Once your raw amp sound has been captured by the load box, a discrete line-level output lets you feed it to a secondary amplifier, mixing console, or recording device.

Now if you accidentally operate the amplifier without a speaker plugged in, the power resistor acts as a dummy load, absorbing the amplifier's.

This is a list of terms that are related to towing and hitches. We have created sections based on the part of your towing configuration that the term relates to.

The output circuit of most vacuum tube valve amplifiers features an output transformer—generally offering multiple impedances. The transformer allows the load impedance of your speakers to be matched to the ideal impedance that the tube wants to drive. Transformers are designed so that the speaker load winding also referred to as a secondary can be used with a variety of speaker impedances. This is done by winding the secondary to work with the highest desired speaker impedance, then includes a connection at half the full winding, then a quarter of the full winding. These multiple speaker output connections are commonly referred to as taps. For example, a common secondary is wound to connect to a maximum speaker load of 16 ohms, and then tapped for use with 8 ohm and 4 ohm speakers. It is common for vacuum tube power amplifiers to have three sets of output connections.

A safety load for your DIY tube guitar amp. As we all know, operating your tube guitar amp without a proper load speaker connected to the output may cause expensive and extensive damage. It's relatively easy to accidentally insert the plug only half-way, or to step on the speaker cord and accidentally pull the plug out of the amp, or, in the confusion before a gig, to simply forget entirely to plug the speaker into the amp. Any of these eventualities can leave your amplifier vulnerable to damage.
