Welcome to Audiophilia. We publish honest and accurate reviews of high end audio equipment and music. Many writers at this magazine use them in their reference system, and their innovative approaches to design led me to believe that Alta had captured something special in the modern speaker market. The Alyssa is a two-way bookshelf design replacing the discontinued Alta IO as the lowest-cost entry into the Alta lineup.

Like many other Alta speakers it also utilizes a ported transmission line design, but more on that later. The gloss black Alyssas were stunning when combined with their curved cabinet.

The Alyssas are not only heavy at 28 lbs each, but they are also deep speakers, measuring I started with the speakers at the recommended minimum of 18 inches from the wall with no toe-in. The Alyssas were connected with a pair of Kimber 12TC cables while the rest of the system was connected with various Kimber interconnects and Audioquest digital and power cables.

I should mention that as an apartment dweller, my listening room is a modest 10 ft wide by 13 ft long, with an open left wall giving way to my kitchen making it wider in practice than on paper. The first thing one is likely to notice about the Alta Alyssa on paper, is its rather astonishing specifications:. The cabinet of the Alyssa overall is one of the most inert I have experienced, yielding virtually no resonance or tone from a light rap of the knuckles. This is because, as I stated before, the Alyssa is no average ported design, but rather a ported transmission line speaker.

This speaker is unmistakably different from almost any design ever to grace my listening room, so for more insight I posed a series of questions to its eager designer Michael Levy. Your company is well known for many high end and cost-no-object designs, and the Alyssa currently marks the entry point into the Alta range.

The challenge in the Alyssa was to use Alta advanced speaker technology to produce a speaker with full range output and modest size. Smaller than even our famous Celestas, and at only one third the price, it took quite a lot of engineering to put all that sound in that small of a cabinet. The Alyssa is literally the culmination of 40 years of work during which I developed several innovations in the quest for a speaker that came as close as possible to the feeling of a live performance.

Hidden inside the Alyssa is a speaker that not only has advanced the engineering of loudspeakers through its shape and the internal XTL transmission line, but also looks at the loudspeaker as an instrument of reproduction. The shape of the Alyssa reinforces all frequencies within the woofer's operation smoothly and equally, removing the need for internal padding.

There are only a couple of damping pads to prevent reflections that cause standing waves. After all, who ever heard of a Stradivarius sounding better with padding in it? The Alyssa also has the latest level of the XTL bass system which gives them unusually strong and deep bass that is smooth and dynamic. The Alyssa replaces the IO as your entry level design, for those familiar with that speaker, what differentiates the new Alyssa?

What should listeners that have heard the IO expect in this new monitor? While they are similar in size, I would not call the Alyssa a replacement for the IOs. This is definitely a major advancement. The tweeter is upgraded with a wider response and greater dynamic output, but the greatest advancement is in the woofer. Specially made for us to our specifications by Morel, it works perfectly with the XTL bass to output cleanly with incredible output from the deepest bass notes to well beyond the crossover frequency.

The 3. The XTL bass has also been refined to a new level to lower distortion and extend response. The Alyssa uses a unique, ported transmission line design. What made you adopt this technology for your speakers?

What are unique advantages, and likewise challenges the design brings? The Alyssas are the answer to two questions I asked Nevill Theil and Richard Small, the co authors of the foundational engineering papers on loudspeaker design at their seminar at the Audio Engineering Society.

The first was about the non linearity of loss padding in a loudspeaker, and the second was about why we got no output from a ported design below resonance. What a loss, I thought. The only system I could find that would couple to a woofer below resonance, thus extending the bass response, was transmission line, but the designs I found all had problems in the upper frequencies that needed heavy padding to damp out.

Thus came the development of XTL bass which is a hybrid of ported and transmission line designs. It has smooth output from well below resonance to beyond the crossover point. The Alyssas are the best example of what the technology can do because they are so small, but perform like they were much larger. My dealers love telling their customers that there is no subwoofer when asked where it is. After hours the Alyssas went from being polite and a bit treble centric, to showing the character of their full and robust bottom-end.

After about hours they seemed to have settled in and I started examining their sound. Right away I knew I had a problem, the voluminous bass was overwhelming my modest listening room. It was troubleshooting time. So began a week of experimentation, first moving the speakers out significantly from the wall inch by inch in the end I settled on 25 inches and experimenting with various degrees of toe-in.

I also experimented with the provided port plugs. Fully inserting the plugs seemed to make the speakers too anemic, inserting them about halfway was a much better compromise and will likely be the recommended route for anyone with a room smaller than mine, but I still favored the sound sans plugs, and changes in positioning helped balance things out.

Image was the widest with no toe-in, but toeing the speakers in just a tad did help make the midrange more present. With the tricky positioning of this unique speaker mostly sorted, I sat down and did my best to analyze how these speakers portrayed music. A toe in cleans things up dramatically-Ed ]. The Alyssas did well with both my Class AB solid state amps, although I preferred them with the more controlled damping of the Hegel.

They are I did find they needed a bit of power and volume to wake up, more so than the KEF R3s they replaced on my stands. The 32 Hz bass is no joke—it is the deepest, most impactful bass I have ever heard in this room, and that includes 3-way floorstanders. Fascinated with the notion of having full range sound in my room for the first time, I spent many days streaming Qobuz tracks with substantial bass information.

Random Access Memories by Daft Punk provided a thrill ride of pummeling live and sampled drum sounds mixed with thick synthesizers and guitars.

The slam and impact of the percussion was so intense that I almost expected an angry neighbor to pound on my door. If they did, the music must have drowned them out. Vocals were a bit of a different story, however, with male vocals keeping their holographic image but losing a bit of the clear diction and forward placement that I was accustomed to. This had been a bigger problem in my previous listening prior to positioning changes—back then, the bass was boomy due to the proximity of the Alyssas to the wall.

Now, the problem was gone, bass was tight, deep and defined, but I still felt as if the low end was dominating the sound signature at the expense of midrange definition and texture.

Brass was tonally and texturally excellent in this brisk reading by Maestro Solti, but the violin shimmer so notable on Decca recordings was a little too recessed for my liking. In fact, I did feel that much of the lower treble and upper midrange felt a bit laid back and mellow, especially compared to the sure footed bass that was both powerful and detailed.

Percussion was impactful, and cymbal crashes had a lovely refined harmonic extension, but transients were a bit rounded, this was particularly noticeable on the timpani strikes found in the final dance.

Here, the orchestral stage was even more detailed and expansive, brass and woodwinds gave the distinct perception that they were physically distant from the strings. The Alyssas do some of their best work on orchestral music—very few speakers are able to project such a deep and detailed three dimensionality with such a large ensemble, but I was missing some of the snap and sizzle. I wanted to see if perhaps they could deliver this on more pop and rock recordings.

This is a modern pop recording and it is mixed like it, with a very prominent enhanced bass, and vocals that are overemphasized in the mix. There are some wonderful jazzy instrumentals on this album by the likes of Robert Glasper, Nate Mercereau, and Paris Strother.

However, because of the plentiful bass, the instrumentals felt somewhat recessed and lacking in body. The Harbeths had a wildly different character than the Alta; the bass did not descend nearly as deep, nor was the stereo image as three-dimensional.

However, immediately the juice flowed back into the midrange as piano and synthesizers came alive with liveliness and color. Vocals were also more defined, with a better sense of articulation. The bass, while rolled off below 50 Hz, still had punch and impact.

This points to a major observation I experienced in my long trial with the Alyssas. They do demonstrate some pickiness with recordings. Well-engineered examples wowed me but other parts of my music collection left me a little disappointed.

I fully expect that part of what I am hearing is the limitation imposed by the size of my listening room, but for a speaker that is billed a solution for spaces that cannot handle a floorstander like its big brother the Alec, this could pose a problem.

On well-engineered recordings, this problem was minimal, but on more modern compressed fare with an emphasized mid bass rather than a true low bass, there was a bit of a blur throughout the midrange extending up into the lower treble. In the living room of a house, or perhaps an apartment with more square footage, I could envision this problem lessening.

The Alta Alyssa is quite an extraordinary speaker, utilizing what I would consider to be an innovative and ingenious design.

Levy clearly is putting out bold and cutting edge products that are outside the box in both conception and execution. However, due to my experience, I would suggest the Alyssas be placed with care and possibly in a space larger than one would normally consider for a bookshelf design. The Alyssas did not quite attain magic in my room, but they did surprise me a great deal along the way. Make no mistake, though, this is a speaker that deserves to be heard, and I would encourage readers to give them a serious listen, especially if you have the real estate to do them justice.
