Sonos Ikea Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker review

Some would say putting your speakers on a bookshelf rather than dedicated speaker stands is the hi-fi equivalent of asking for ketchup in a Michelin star restaurant. But what if the speaker was actually a bookshelf? But don't worry, you don't have to put it together yourself. Perhaps our favourite feature is the opportunity to link the Symfonisk bookshelf speaker to a Beam , Playbar , Playbase or the Sonos Amp and use it as a surround channel for a decidedly neat and affordable 5.

It is typically IKEA in its refined yet distinguished design. You may want to do a little experimentation with EQ-ing, depending on how you have your Symfonisk stationed. For reference, though, we ended up taking out a little bass with the speaker resting on our Atacama hi-fi racks, but kept the Loudness feature on for a little extra punch and vibrancy.

The result is that we can confidently say that this is the best-sounding bookshelf we have tested. Though it was never going to rival the Sonos One for sound quality — and it doesn't — the same character is there. This particular Symfonisk is bold and focused in its delivery, with voices especially, unashamedly belting out the more animated of our tunes with comparable energy. The balance is generally good as well, though we had tweaked and fine-tuned it to take out some bass.

It can go quiet as well. It is not meant as a slight when we say this Symfonisk speaker would be ideal for unobtrusive background music. Simply it can handle hanging back just as much as it enjoys throwing the kitchen sink.

Busy arrangements especially get overcrowded, with the sound often becoming cloudy a little rough around the edges, while rhythmically — though not without punch or drive — it can seem a little pedestrian, and the nuances of dynamic expression are often all but lost. Strictly speaking, there is no other multi-room option at this price that can offer more in the way of these sonic facets, while still delivering such a bold and weighty presentation. Yet the performance still feels a little too blunt to be worthy of five stars.

Ikea and Sonos Want You to Hang Your Speakers on a Wall

Not only does it look great but the sound quality is comparable to some of the best speakers on the market, such as the Sonos One. The Symfonisk Picture Frame wireless speaker from Sonos and Ikea is the perfect blend of design and performance. Price and availability. Should I buy it? You can turn the volume up without fear of distortion, and preset volume limits are there to help keep your neighbors happy.

The $99 Symfonisk bookshelf speaker and $ Symfonisk table lamp speaker really deliver Sonos and Ikea's Symfonisk collaboration took a lot.

Ikea and Sonos picture frame speaker looks great — just don’t hang it up

The Symfonisk bookshelf speaker is the second of two new products born of a partnership between the Swedish furniture manufacturer Ikea and the American premium multiroom audio specialists Sonos. Where the table lamp is more obviously a piece of furniture, the bookshelf speaker is a more traditional audio product, at least on the surface. The plastic casing is available in white with a grey fabric speaker grille or black. You can even pair two of them for stereo separation, and they can be used with a Sonos TV speaker systems as part of a 5. The back of the speaker has two holes for the mounting bracket, while the power and optional ethernet socket are recessed with cable guides for flush fitting. But it still produces room-filling sound with all the clarity and punch you expect from Sonos, missing a bit of bass and richness you might get with more expensive speakers. The sound is also fairly directional, meaning it suits being placed at one end of the room like a traditional speaker, rather than in the middle of it like many smart speakers. There are rubber feet on the bottom and side, so you can place it in landscape or portrait orientation. Turning a wall-mounted speaker into a floating shelf is a surprisingly good way of hiding a piece of technology in plain sight, removing clutter in the process. These will make excellent, cost-effective and easy-to-mount rear speakers for a Sonos 5.

We purchase our own speakers and put them under the same test bench, so that you can compare the results easily. No cherry-picked units sent by brands. This rectangular speaker can blend in nicely with most home decor. You can mount it to your wall and use it as a shelf, though the wall-mounting brackets aren't included in the box and must be purchased separately. It has a bright sound profile, which you can customize thanks to the bass and treble sliders featured on its Sonos S2 companion app.

Pocket-lint - Sonos and Ikea announced a collaboration back in We've had to wait a little, but the results of that partnership are finally here in the form of the Symfonisk range, which includes a speaker which doubles-up as a mini shelf, and a table lamp with a speaker as its base.

Ikea is known for functional, affordable furniture. Sonos is known for easy-to-use, but not necessarily affordable, wireless multiroom.

Review: Sonos Ikea Symfonisk Speakers

A few months ago, Ikea teased on its Instagram that it was teaming up with Sonos for another Symfonisk speaker. The benefit of the picture frame form factor is that it makes use of vertical wall space, and is meant to be showcased as opposed to hidden. This tracks with the first two Symfonisk speakers , which launched in

Michael Potuck. After first launching the original Ikea x Sonos Symfonisk smart table lamp speaker back in , the two companies are back with the second generation. The new Symfonisk features a fresh design with multiple base and shade options, AirPlay 2 support, improved audio, and more. The new version also matches up with the leak we saw earlier this month. For example, a lot of people use the lamp speaker on a nightstand, which led us to create a new, slightly smaller lamp base. Along with the more compact footprint, the new Symfonisk offers more customization as Ikea will sell the speaker lamp base and lamp shade separately with options including textile and glass in black and white.

Place the speaker horizontally or vertically, or mount it on the wall to use as a practical shelf.

Designed to be hung or leaned up against the wall, the new speaker is part artwork and all Sonos multi-room speaker. Well designed and with improved sound quality over the previous Ikea speakers, the Symfonisk Picture Frame is largely successful. Whether this is right for you or not will largely depend on how much you like the look, as this large speaker tends to dominate the area where you place it. For this speaker, Ikea has designed something that looks like a bit of art. Currently, you can buy the Symfonisk Picture Frame in two colours: black and white. In the future, Ikea is planning to release a set of new frames.

The new collab is offered in black or white and includes interchangeable fonts for different looks. Similar to its predecessors, the piece is meant to be both functional and imaginative, and can be disguised as an art piece that delivers high-quality sound throughout your home. Users will also have access to more than streaming services and the full range of Sonos products. This long-term collaboration continues to deliver exciting new ideas that will bring great listening experiences to homes across the globe — we look forward to delivering more unique products together in the future.
