Feature Guest - Matthew Simmons

After a life threatening illness in Garth Murray, who is part owner with his wife Stephanie, incurred a brain injury. After this traumatic experience he started having very vivid dreams, sometimes while still awake.

In one of those dreams he saw the S3 and all of the relevant dimensions. In a later dream he saw the M5 and the name of the company. In one further dream he observed some materials that were used inside the speakers.

Shortly after the first dream through a series of quite unusual events Garth meet Mathew Simmons. Mathew is one of the directors of "The Arvus Group". Matthew started repairing speakers at the age of twelve and has gone on to design and build speakers used around the world.

Mathew has a close family member that has also suffered a brain injury similar to Garth's so understood some of the difficulties he had. Together they formed a very close friendship. At the beginning Mathew was able to offer help and technical expertise that would ensure that the dreams would come to fruition.

The drivers used in the first speakers were all designed and constructed buy Mathew Simmons. In March of as a result of the dreams Theophany Loudspeakers was established. Since that time the models have improved as we have learnt more and more about varying aspects of speaker construction and design. Theophany tried many driver makes and models but found that the drivers and the expertise offered by Arvus always surpassed that which was available on the world market. The ability to request changes and improvements, even design developments to the drivers we use has given us an edge over other brands.

Arvus now produce our drivers specifically designed to give us maximum benefit when paired with our unique cabinets. Our philosophy has never been focused solely around standard speaker construction theory. While we do believe in the many advancements that our competitors have made we have found that some key and quite critical areas are often neglected.

Accordingly we have chosen to focus on several very specific areas of design. Namely elimination of Harmonic distortion in both the drivers and the cabinets, very fast transient response or attack and aerodynamic airflow. All of which improve the overall listening experience to a point of near reality. These efforts have not gone unrewarded.

We have had many favourable magazine reviews both here in New Zealand and overseas. We have also been awarded several business awards including Champion Canterbury Business of the Year, Producer Manufacturer, Small Enterprise , an award which we are very proud of. Our clientele is continuing to grow as we market our product both in New Zealand and internationally with markets continuing to grow in Australasia, Russia, USA, Europe and the Middle East.

We are looking to move into markets in Asia over the coming year. Our goal is that our clients not only have an enjoyable listening experience but that they have a truly emotional experience that they will not easily forget.

Arvus , a New Zealand based company, recently announced the release of a new product, the FIRE-2H, a device that converts eight Firewire channels from the output of any Apple device into 7. On the heels of its latest development, I posed a series of across-the-board questions to Simmons via e-mail in order to better understand the company. MS: I started my business when I was twelve, fixing speakers, and it seemed like a natural extension of my fascination with music. While growing up, I played flute, cello, tenor horn, percussion, and harp. Along with the production work I did on some Balligomingo tracks from their first album. Since March , over 20 million people have heard this short piece, and it is now played 24 hours a day somewhere in China! MS: I needed a new new name for a new product range, and I took the "avus" name from the Audi Avus picture on my wall and added the "R".

I need to know the locations of the splits in the speaker wires. I know each channel comes out of the head unit as one line, but they must each branch into two lines; one for the door speakers, and one for the tweeter. Any help would be most appreciated! That or use only the tweeter side of the crossover supplied with the new speakers inline with the tweeters. I was thinking of that, but is there anything wrong with leaving the mids run at full range? Then I can install the relevant filter circuitry right next to the tweeters and mids, and not worry about finding the central split in the speaker lines. The alpine tweeters are supposed to be 36mm, and I measure I sure did. Despite the adaptor, it looks a little odd compared to the stock head unit, but what can you do… trust jaguar to make everything so abnormal! Wish I could find a sub to fit in the pre-cut opening in the parcel shelf…— The original message included these comments:.

When Matthew Simmons hears it, he has a slightly different response, which you could paraphrase as "let's save some lives. Simmons, co-founder of New Zealand technology innovation firm Arvus Group, wants to direct inaudible, sub-bass sound waves at mountainsides to both prevent and release snow build-up and avoid the surprise avalanches that kill every year. The waves are called infrasound. The same ultra-low frequency technology can also frighten away birds from the airspace around airports, thus reducing the accidents that happen when birds meet jet engines, he notes.

Locally-made Theophany loudspeakers feature a very unusual cabinent design. Sometimes truth can be stranger than fiction, and with Garth Murray, the owner of Theophany Speakers, this is definitely the case. Fortunately for us, his story, which could have gone so dreadfully wrong, has an almost fairytale ending. Theophany speakers have developed a cult following with audiophiles, as sales to go from strength to strength as the world beats a track to Garth's door to listen to the Theophany speakers do their stuff. According to Garth, 90 per cent of people who come to Theophany showrooms end up purchasing speakers and even more impressively, 30 per cent have actually cried upon hearing them for the first time. If these statistics seem somewhat bizarre, they're just peanuts compared to how Theophany speakers came to be.

Each pair of the loudspeakers has taken hundreds of man hours each and the result is of course extravagant and almost artistic.
