Amaravati farmers launch 45-day-long Maha Padayatra to Tirupati

Amaravati farmers protest in fields before launching the padayatra on Monday.

AMARAVATI: Farmers of the capital city area launched Maha Padayatra from Amaravati to Tirupati on Monday. Political parties including TDP, Janasena, BJP, CPI, CPM, BSP and AAP have extended their support to the farmers' padayatra.
Hundreds of farmers gathered at Thullur before starting their walkathon to temple city Tirupati demanding that the state government should continue Amaravati as the only state capital.
The padayatra would pass through Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Chittoor districts before culminating at Tirupati.

The yatra would continue for 45 days and reach Tirupati on December 17. The farmers would cover nearly 70 villages during the 45-day-long rally. The farmers' Joint Action Committee (JAC) has formed about 20 committees to oversee the arrangements for the padayatra. The committees would take care of the makeshift shelters and food for the participants during.
"We have planned to walk about 14-15km per day in different spells. We have taken adequate safety arrangements as women were also taking part in the yatra,” said JAC leader Sivareddy .
"The yatra has the support of people from all the regions in the state. It should open the state government's eyes so that they keep Amaravati as the single capital of the state,” said TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu.
TDP leaders Prattipati Pullarao, Nakka Anand Babu, Tenali Sravan Kumar and other leaders attended the padayatra launch event at Thullur.
The farmers have been agitating against the state government’s plans to trifurcate the capital city ever since the chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced the decision in the state assembly about a year ago.
After failing to get permission from the police, the farmers filed a petition in the high court. The HC granted permission to the padayatra with several conditions. The HC directed the farmers not to conduct any public meetings during the yatra and use loudspeakers and DJ systems. The HC also asked the farmers not to make provocative speeches during the rally. HC directed the farmers to use hand mikes to spread their message.
Earlier, DGP Gautham Sawang had refused permission for the yatra in view of the political sensitivities involved in the issue. Tadikonda legislator Dr U Sridevi lashed out at the farmers for taking up the padayatra to Tirupati instead of making a rally to TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu’s residence for ruining their lives. She said that the farmers' JAC is misleading the local farmers without taking the assurances of the chief minister into consideration. Home minister M Sucharitha said that Amaravati was also one of the three capital cities proposed by the state government
