♫KRAID'S LAIR (Metroid) SNES Arrangement - NintendoComplete

Published
This is an arrangement of "Kraid's Lair," a theme by Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka from Nintendo's 1986 NES game Metroid. I have arranged the song for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck.

All of the Metroid games have great music in them, but the Kraid theme from Metroid: Zero Mission is probably my favorite of the entire bunch. With this, I was wanting to recreate the GBA track on the SNES to take advantage of the system's higher sound quality. I think it came out sounding pretty similar to the original - more so than I was expecting considering that I didn't reuse any of the original song's samples. I created most of the instruments (the two choirs, the bell, and lead synth, and the low synth string pad) by sampling recordings of Mellotron tapes which have a pretty distinct warbly, old fashioned sound that I really like.

Mellotron Metroid sounded like something that would be fun to make, and it was. I don't care how much of a nerd that might make me.

(In case you don't know, a Mellotron is pretty much a prehistoric rompler, but it uses tape instead of roms. It doesn't make use of any integrated circuits at all, and it was used a lot in popular music in the 60s and 70s. It's cool, if you like that sort of thing.)

I also tacked on a SNES rendition of the Metroid Prime item fanfare at the end of the video. Because I felt like it.

So yeah, I'm pretty hyped about Metroid Dread, so I figured why not do a Metroid cover? :) Thanks for listening!
