2022 Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20 | The best workhorse guitar for under $1000? Review & Demo

Published
This is the 2022 Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20 in Sunset Burst!

The middle tier instrument of the three 2022 Revstar models, the Standard will set you back around $799 or €780, and this guitar is specced pretty amazingly for that price.

Underneath the beautiful burst finish, the Revstar Standard has a chambered mahogany body and a maple top. The neck is mahogany too, and it’s reinforced with carbon fiber. The 12” radius fingerboard is rosewood, and you have 22 jumbo stainless steel frets.

Sounds-wise, there’s a pair of Yamaha’s VH5 humbuckers fitted, and a Focus Switch on the push-pull tone pot. The Focus Switch is effectively a passive boost – it subtly boosts your signal, shaves off some highs and boosts your mids and low-end. The Revstar Standard also comes in a pretty decent and well-padded gigbag.

Now, I’ve already tried the more affordable 2022 Revstar Element model and was blown away – so this video is all about seeing how well the Standard guitar performs given its increased price and improved specs on paper. In the video, I test the guitar in as many different musical styles as I can, from country, folk and indie, to pop, rock, punk, metal and more – and we test out that Focus Switch as much as we can too.

My setup was as follows: I ran the Revstar into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, also using my Greer Lightspeed for the overdrive and my Revv G3 for the heavy distortion sounds. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.
