Academy Of Tone #116: Brian May, Carlos Santana, Slash + Al Di Meola: what do they have in common?!

Published
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are pondering the big questions and wondering what the connection is between Queen’s Brian May, Carlos Santana, Guns N’ Roses’ Slash and Al Di Meola!

Well, they’re all guitar players, of course, and they’re all legends in their own way… but maybe there’s something else Thomas has spotted – and on the episode, the guys will dive into the careers, guitar riffs and gear that have helped propel these four axe slingers to superstardom.

First up, we have Brian May, whose royal British tones are crafted from the most British of components: his homemade Red Special guitar, the Vox AC30 amplifier, and the Rangemaster treble booster pedal. From hard rock to chart-topping pop and operatic musical soundscapes, May has had his hand in it all, and has crafted maybe the guitar world’s most recognizable voice in the process.

The we have Carlos Santana, the master of the singing melodic guitar line. Santana’s blues-based, Latin grooves introduced modal playing to the masses, and his unique rhythmic phrasing is as well-known as his long line of signature Paul Reed Smith Guitars.

Third on the list is Slash – or Saul Hudson, as his family and childhood friends probably know him – the British-American lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses, and the man who may indeed hold the title of being hard rock and hair metal’s last true guitar hero. Slash’s equipment is as traditional as his Stoke-on-Trent roots, and he’s famous for plugging Gibson Les Pauls into Marshall amps (yes, we know the guitar that made him famous was a replica!) just like the proven rockstars of the past like Eric Clapton in Cream, Free’s Paul Kossoff, or Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy page… the list goes on! Slash deals in steady riffs, solid licks and catchy melodies, and he’s played with everyone from Michael Jackson to Alice Cooper to Insane Clown Posse to Rhianna – and loads more – in his career so far.

Our final guitarist under the spotlight on the show is the enigmatic and brilliant Al Di Meola. A lightning quick and incredibly precise player by the tender age of 18, Di Meola has come to be a figurehead for progressive music, superior fretboard gymnastics and rhythmic finesse across a number of genres. Best known for being one of the three leads on the legendary Friday Night in San Francisco live album (along with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía) Di Meola also teamed up with Chick Corea to bring jazz fusion to the masses, and has been a huge force in bringing Spanish guitar across to the mainstream electric world.

So, that’s four very different guitar legends to analyze and discuss in the episode! But we’re excited to do it, and Thomas will be discussing as many facets of their lives in music and gear as we have time for, as well as tone hunting all their best sounds for AMP1! We’ll see you there for the fun!
