Academy Of Tone #127: the ultimate tape echo show PART 1 – the real deal vs their digital copies!

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas takes a deep dive into what is quite possibly the most iconic electric guitar effect of all time – the tape echo!

In this, the first of a two-show series on the tape echo, Thomas will start at the beginning, and take us through the history of delay. He’ll show off some classic analog, digital and tape delay units, and give a history and explanation of all the different technologies used to create these effects.

Perhaps the most legendary of all the tape echo effects is the Roland RE-201, which has been used by everyone from Pink Floyd to Radiohead in creating some of the most ethereal and compelling guitar sounds of all time. Thomas will have a genuine RE-201 on the show, and he’ll explain the magic behind the pedal, as well as demoing it up against digital recreations, including Roland/Boss’s brand-new RE-2 pedal.

He'll also demonstrate some of the key tones and settings you can use with modern-day recreation tape echo pedals to nail some of the sounds of legendary players like David Gilmour, and we’ll see how close the digital algorithms get in recreating those genuine analog tape tones.

We’re sure this will be an extremely eye-opening episode… but you should already mark your diary for PART 2 of the show, which is following next week! In PART 2, there will be a bunch more tape echoes – real and digital – plus comparisons between the iconic Echoplex and Thomas’s beloved Hughes & Kettner Replex pedal, plus more!
