Academy Of Tone #131: how to make cheap guitars sound expensive! Thomas's top tone tips and tricks

Published
On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are wondering what it takes – and indeed, if it is possible – to make an affordable guitar sound like a boutique tone monster, and what to look for when trying to score a great budget guitar.

This is something of a passion project for Thomas, as he has been involved with the design of several affordable signature Vintage guitars over the years, all of which are based on his beloved ’61 Strat. Can those guitars approach the performance, the playability and tone of the original? That’s the question the guys will attempt to answer during the show!

There are many factors to consider here. To make affordable guitars, you have to limit costs in certain key areas: the choice of woods and components, the electronics, pickups and hardware, the attention to detail, quality control and the ‘personal touch’ during the build process, and the setup process afterwards.

With affordable guitars, making poor choices during the build process can lead to muffled tones that are not dynamic, and lack sustain. Meanwhile, poor builds and setups can result in tuning stability issues. Thomas will talk about how he has learned to avoid these things over the years, and how he ended up with Vintage sig nature guitars he can be truly proud of!

He’ll also discuss the factors you have to focus on to get what he considers to be the best possible tones out of any guitar at any price: an SRV-esque woodiness with a nice bite for blues, or maybe some other tones which are less demanding on the guitar… and the guitarist!

Finally, we’ll have a few affordable guitars in the studio alongside the usual vintage selection, and Thomas will make his recommendations on what exactly you should be looking for when it comes to purchasing instruments on the cheaper end of the spectrum. We’d also love to hear your thoughts on what you see as being the best affordable guitars out there, so join us in the chat and we’ll talk about as many as we can!
