Academy Of Tone #91: Fresh from the studio: Thomas guests on his friend Chris Conrad’s album…

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by friend and special guest Christian Conrad to talk all things guitar, gear and the current state of the music store… and Chris’s new album, which Thomas just laid a solo down for!

Thomas and Chris go back a long way – both are native Saarlanders, and Thomas was Chris’s guitar teacher many moons ago. Step forward to 2022, and Chris heads the guitar department at SIX + FOUR, the leading music store in the Saarland, and where the AMP1 is the best-selling amp ins the shop’s history.

A gifted musician and a true guitar gear expert, Chris will join Thomas for a deep discussion on all things musical. Being in the same regional music scene together for decades, the guys have loads of great stories about local bands and shows, as well as local studios where they’ve recorded a bunch over the years, and the challenges of life as a hired gun in different bands and ensembles.

Chris will bring along some of his best gear to showcase on the show, including his PRS DGT and his heavy relic Custom Shop Strat, and his Two-Rock Cardiff amplifier. As a player who often performs both electric and acoustic guitar styles, Chris has also built up a pedalboard that works excellently for both types of instrument, featuring an Okko Compressor, a NUX delay, and a Laney Ironheart preamp. He and Thomas will check out the board and AB the tones against AMP1 and some of the FX from Thomas’s collection.

And, as Chris works at a bricks and mortar music store, the guys will discuss the current state of music shops, talking about how things have changed over the years, first with the advent of the internet, then the corona virus… and what the future might have in store!

Of course there will be plenty of tasty jams too. Chris has just released a solo CD – on which Thomas contributed a solo – and the guys will play a few numbers together, while Thomas also shows how he creates his tone for that unique performance…. we’re looking forward to a cozy hangout among friends!
