Budget 2022: Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin wraps up Committee of Supply debate

Published
The Budget and Committee of Supply process can be “very involved” but when you’re in the business of making things work, of “doing the heavy lifting”, details do matter, said Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin. Wrapping up the Committee of Supply 2022 debate in the House on Friday (Mar 11), he said he wanted to “take a step back and look at the world we live in”. He described it as a world with worries and uncertainties ranging from COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine to inflation, changes wrought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the US-China clash and demographic trends in fast-ageing Singapore. It is also a post-truth world, whether “truth might seem indeterminate and malleable” and stories are powerful but can be false or used out of context. The question for leaders and parliamentarians, Mr Tan said, is what do we do with these stories? Mr Tan said the Government’s basis for leadership is trust and respect.

He noted that Singapore is “in good health” as it tackles its challenges, and it has only been able to achieve this because of its reserves – giving it the wherewithal to look after its people now and for the future.
