Celebrations in Madrid bring in 2022

(1 Jan 2022) Authorities allowed only 7,000 people into Madrid's Puerta del Sol downtown square, the most famous venue for Spanish New Year celebrations and traditionally attended by around 20,000 revellers.
Those permitted to enter were asked to wear masks and keep their distance, with police using drones carrying loudspeakers to control the crowd.
Even so, many people crowded together and didn't wear face coverings as the bell in the Casa de Correos overlooking the square tolled midnight.
Some ate 12 grapes in time with the 12 chimes, in accordance with tradition, as fireworks lit up the Madrid sky.
