I tried Steve Albini's Great Advice on Guitar Recording!

....and it payed off right away. I have mostly recorded my amps and cabs placed at the floor to maximize low end, but that set up introduces a lot of phase cancellation, so its a trade off. In this video I'm recording an amp at a 16" distance both at the floor and also significantly offset to the floor, and I really liked the results!
