Misirlou - Dick Dale & The Del Tones 1962 (Remastered)

"Miserlou" more often rendered "Misirlou" is a traditional Eastern Mediterranean song dating back to the 1920s and originating in Greece. The original author of the song is not known, but Arabic, Greek and Jewish musicians were playing it by the 1920s where it became popular from then onwards in the Armenian, Arab, and Greek American communities who settled in the United States. The earliest known recording of the song is a 1927 Greek rebetiko/tsifteteli composition influenced by Middle Eastern music. The song was a hit in 1946 for Jan August, an American pianist and xylophonist nicknamed "the one-man piano duet". Later, it gained worldwide popularity through Dick Dale's 1962 American surf rock version, renamed by Capitol Records "Missirlou" originally titled "Miserlou", which popularized the song in Western Pop Culture.
The original 45rpm single was issued on Deltone 5019 (1962) & Deltone 4939 (1963) - Misirlou (N Roubanis-F Wise-M Leeds-S K Russell) by Dick Dale and The Del-Tones. Various versions have since been since recorded, mostly based on Dale's version, including other surf and rock versions by bands such as the Beach Boys, the Ventures, Consider the Source, and the Trashmen, as well as international orchestral easy listening (exotica) versions by musicians such as Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Dale's surf rock version later gained renewed popularity when director Quentin Tarantino used it in his 1994 film Pulp Fiction, and again when it was sampled in the Black Eyed Peas' song "Pump It" (2006), also used in the movies Space Jam and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.
Richard Anthony Monsour (May 4, 1937 – March 16, 2019), known professionally as Dick Dale, was an American rock guitarist. Not only an avid surfer who believed in the clean healthy lifestyle, but a pioneer of surf music, drawing on Middle Eastern music scales and experimenting with reverb. Dale was known as "The King of the Surf Guitar". He got his start in the late '50s playing with his band The Del-Tones for surfers at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California. With authorities concerned about the mix of young people and guitars, one of the requirements at the Ballroom was that every male patron wear a tie. So the audience was often made up of barefooted guys in surfer garb wearing ties that were handed out at the door.
Dale has been credited with popularizing tremolo picking, a technique that is now widely used in many musical genres, such as extreme metal, and folk. His speedy single-note staccato picking technique was unrivalled until guitarists like Eddie Van Halen entered the music scene. He was cited as one of the fathers of heavy metal for pushing the limits of amplification. Working together with Leo Fender, Dale also pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing thick and previously unheard volumes including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. Dale also pioneered the use of portable reverb effects. Mahalo iā ʻoe, Richard.
