The Mercedes SL500 has come into us with its stock, 20 year old sound system. The new owner wants to upgrade the sound throughout the vehicle, increasing clarity and bass with more volume, and also improve the functionality to modern day standards. All of this needs to be achieved while maintaining a stock look.

Step 1 of this install is stripping down the doors of the vehicle to fully soundproof them. Soundproofing is essential in every install, as it helps reduce rattles and resonations, while also improving the environment for the new speakers to work in. Soundproofing has been applied to the inside of the doors and the reverse side of the door card to maximise the impact of the 3mm Skinz soundproofing material.

Within the front doors, the stock SL500 sound system contained a small tweeter, a 3" mid range, and a 6" driver which was directed into the door as opposed to into the cabin. This is a lot of components squeezed into a small area. We are fitting the Hertz MPK165P.3 component set in its place, which is a 2 way system featuring a tweeter and a 6.5" driver. We are blanking the 3" mid range from stock, and will be mounting the Hertz driver facing into the vehicle, which will provide much better sound.

The subwoofer, a 10" Eton compact active subwoofer, is being mounted behind the carpet in the passenger footwell, bolted directly to the body of the vehicle. This location allows for minimal visual and spatial impact within the cabin, but being bolted to the car itself, the bass transfer around the vehicle is phenomenal.

The new system is powered by an Audison SR4.500 amplifier, which is being discretely mounted in a storage compartment behind the passenger seat. This allows the front end to run full active, with the 4 Audison channels running the Hertz component set in each door, and the subwoofer runs active from its own internal amplification.

Finally, we are updating the head unit on the SL500 to a more modern Kenwood unit featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to replace the dated Mercedes unit. This is fitted using a fascia panel that allows for a very similar appearance to the stock unit.
