Sounds for an Empty House - Simon Goodwin - metal and air

❯❯ The Track ❯❯
This work starts from an excerpt from one of a series of existing recordings made on location in Plas Bodfa in windy weather conditions. I sonically processed this audio via domestic heating systems in a different empty house; my late parents home - the house where I grew up.

The heating systems used were a hot-air central heating system and an old convection heater. The original audio was first played through the central heating ducting from the ground floor and recorded via an upstairs vent. The process was later repeated with the new recording with the microphone and amp locations reversed. This second recording was subsequently transmitted through the convection heater up in the houses attic, recorded with a contact mic.

The finished audio piece utilises all three re-recordings.

❯❯ The Project ❯❯
‘Sounds for an Empty House’ is a project in two phases.

The first was a 24-hour livestream, inviting 24 sound artists and groups to live-mix, augment and manipulate sounds created by Plas Bodfa, a currently empty manor house in North Wales. Each hour was recorded and unleashed into the world as source material for an open call for new audio compositions.

Part 2 is the culmination of all these creative efforts, a collection of works reimagining ways that sound can connect people to place, illuminating minute details of a specific location through a unique audio experience. 44 artists have contributed to the three albums, creatives from Wales, UK, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and the United States.

Each track is a unique and innovative remix, using only recordings from the 24-hour livestream as source material. The tracks are as varied as the artists, but the sounds created by the house itself serve as unifying elements, guiding listeners through the soundscapes - gusty winds through exposed drainpipes, a crackly panel breathing with the airflow, water dripping, a seagull on the slate roofing tiles.

❯❯ The Albums ❯❯
Sounds for an Empty House is an album with three sides, created by 44 Welsh and international sound artists in dialogue with an empty house.

Each partner has crafted an album, each in its own style and platform. Plas Bodfa Projects brings the digitally submitted tracks to their destination, giving each submitted piece a physical place inside Plas Bodfa through a collection of minimalist videos. Soundlands’s gaze faces outwards, broadcasting the works into the world in a digital album, released freely, sharing far and wide. Amgueddfa Llwch zooms inwards, noticing connections between the tracks and the house and each other, creating a path to follow, a succession of sounds.
