Students grabbed scissors calculators as defense during Michigan school

Survivors of the deadly Michigan school shooting recalled the harrowing moments bullets rang out inside the building — prompting students to arm themselves with scissors and teachers to barricade doors, according to reports. Oxford High School senior Aiden Page and his fellow classmates had just started their AP statistics class when gunfire erupted Tuesday, but they were prepared for the terrifying situation because they conduct frequent active-shooter drills, CNN reported. Page told CNN that his teacher rushed to lock the door before the students shoved desks against it.“We grabbed calculators, we grabbed scissors just in case the shooter got in and we had to attack them,” he said, adding that one round actually pierced one of the desks. Page texted his family and told them he loved them before checking on his classmates, who had covered the windows with whiteboards and hid around the room amid the chaos, The New York Times reported.“You never think it’s going to happen to you – and then it does. It’s just insane,” he told the newspaper, adding that it will take some time before he is ready to return to school.“Definitely not like tomorrow or probably even not this week,” Page said. Meanwhile, freshman Mark Kluska told CNN that he heard someone announce a lockdown over the school’s loudspeakers.“I started realizing it was real when I began to hear yelling,” he said. Sign language teacher, Moises Cortez, shut the door and jammed it with a metal doorstop as the students hunkered down.“He shut the door and put like a metal doorstopper so no one would be able to kick in the door,” Kluska told CNN. “After he turned off the lights, he told us to get to the corner because this might not be a drill and he wants to be safe.”In a few moments, someone who claimed to be a sheriff was heard yelling for them to come out. A dozen or so frightened students are seen on video shared to social media immediately skeptical of the supposed authority figure. One girl is heard whispering, “We don’t know who that is.”The students then jumped out of one of the room’s first-story windows and ran through the snow to a main entrance of the high school manned by a uniformed officer, according to the footage. The three students killed in the attack were Tate Myre, a 16-year-old “standout” football player, Hana St. Juliana, 14, and Madisyn Baldwin, 17. The alleged gunman, an unidentified 15-year-old sophomore at the school, was caught five minutes after a flood of 911 calls were made from the school, officials said. He was being held at Children’s Village and is not cooperating with police.
