Tech Talk w Matt & Don: Getting the Best Sound Outdoors

Summertime is upon us and what better time to talk about bringing the music outdoors and getting the best sound possible from landscape and architectural speakers. Don and Matt plan to discuss a mixture of outdoor/patio systems and some cool audio projects they are working on now (ie. upcoming reviews, new projects, new guests, etc). Matt plans to do some measurements/testing of patio system layouts and then do an article/video on how to design patio systems for good sound.

Matt talks about understanding the physics to realize that outdoor systems are different from indoor systems, what he hadn't really appreciated himself was just how important it is to get the placement/coverage right. What really ends up dominating the system is the inverse square law. Unlike rooms, which do not follow that at all below 150-200hz or so, it is what dominates outdoors. So co-locating subs with mains becomes more useful/valuable (or at least locating them in a fashion where they offer similar coverage). It also makes it important to consider alternative speaker designs for outdoors. CBT is actually a really good outdoor speaker option because they don't follow the inverse square law, and thus provide better coverage outdoors. Besides JBL, nobody makes any outdoor rated speakers for which that is true. It's too bad, it would be a good idea for a surface mount or bollard speaker. New product idea?
